    ABSTRACT

    Comparison of vocational preference between special and general class pupils at high school level

    The fundamental purpose of special education is to enable disabled pupils to live as a part of the general population and hence vocational education must be introduced at an earlier stage to the disabled pupils than to the general population. The quality of the special education has direct correlation with the quality of life of the graduate pupils of such institutions. Therefore, this study seeks to find the pupil's vocational preferences through vocational education that are being offered in high schools in Chungcheongnam-do and also seeks to compare the vocational preferences of disabled pupils in special classes withthe general classes. Through this, the basic data will be collected which will be used to facilitate successful rehabilitation of the pupils in special education institutions. The following issues are raised in the study.
    Firstly, is there a difference in vocational preference between general and special class pupils in to ? high-level classification and ? middle-level classification?
    Secondly, does ? area and ? gender affect vocational preference of special class pupils?
    The pupils and teachers of high school special classes are the subjects of this research and sampling was taken from Chungcheongnam-do. Out of 150 surveys conducted on the pupils of special classes, 135 were recovered and among them, 16 were not usable. So the research is based on 119 survey results. For pupils in general classes, out of 150, 128 surveys were recovered and among them, 7 were excluded which left 121 survey results for the research.
    In order to study vocational preferences of pupils in special and general classes currently in high schools, surveys were conducted focusing on the high-level classification and middle-level classification of Korea Standard Classification of Occupations (KSCO).
    In high-level classification, general class pupils' preferences were of following order: service sector occupation, engineer or semi-professional occupation and machinery operator or assembly worker. The special class pupils'preferences were as follows: service sector worker, professional worker and engineer or semi-professional worker.
    In special classes at high school level, the vocational preference differed according to gender. Male pupils' order of preference is as follows: service sector worker, engineer or semi-professional worker and machinery operator or assembly worker. Female pupil's order of preference is as follows: service sector worker, professional worker and engineer or semi-professional worker.
    According to the area of the special class pupils'residence, pupils in urban city areas preferred in the following order: service sector worker, professional worker and engineer or semi-professional. However in small-town and rural areas, pupils showed the following order of preference: service sector worker, professional worker and retail worker.
    Then we go on to observe middle-level classification preference.
    When we look at the middle-level classification preference of professional occupations in 1st high-level classification, we can see that general class pupils are showing higher preference and also can see that general class pupils are showing high preference in professional occupation in the education sector but on the other hand, the disabled pupils are showing high preference in professional occupations in the cultural, art and broadcasting sector.
    When we look at the middle-level classification preference of the engineering and semi-professional occupations in 2nd highlevel classification, it can be seen that 10% of general class pupils, which is quite a high amount, showed strong preferences in mechanical and engineering occupations and also in computer-related occupations. Among male disabled pupils, pupils residing in city areas showed strong preference in computer-related occupations.
    When we look at middlelevel classification preferences of clerical occupations in 3rd high-level classification, it can be seen that general class pupils' preference is twice as strong than disabled pupils but both general and special class pupils are showing strong preference in office jobs. In disabled pupils, female pupils show strong preference in rural and small-town areas.
    When we look at middlelevel classification preferences of service and retail occupations in the 4th highlevel classification,it can be seen that disabled pupils' preferences are twice as higher than pupils in general. General class pupils preferred person-to-person service occupations whereas disabled pupils, especially the female pupils in city areas, showed higher preference in cookery and in food service occupations.
    When we see middlelevel classification preferences of agricultural, forestry and fishery occupations in 6th highlevel classification, it can be seen that disabled pupils show stronger preference. Male pupils in small-townsand rural areas showed highest preference in agricultural occupations.
    When we look at the middlelevel classification preference of machinery and equipment operating occupations in 8th highlevel classification, it can be seen than general class pupils are showing higher preference than disabled pupils. General pupils showed high preference in fixed and stationed machinery operation and in system operation but disabled pupils, especially in small-town and rural areas, showed high preference in driving and related occupations.
    When we see middlelevel classification preference of simple laboring in 9th highlevel classification, it can be seen that in both general and special class pupils are showing low level of preference.
    The vocational preference of special class pupils at high school level was observed at highlevel classification and middlelevel classificationlevel and based on these results, the teachers were asked whether the survey results reflected the competency of the pupils in their institutions. 17.65% replied that the survey results correspond with the pupil's competency. 40 replied, "not corresponding" and 21 replied, "highly not corresponding" making 51.26% of the teachers replying that the pupils have shown vocational preferences with lack of consideration of their own competency.
    Based on the outcome of this research, the following suggestions are made concerning the vocational preference of special class pupils at high school level. Chungcheongnam-do area consists of middle to small-size cities and rural areas and hence comparison with large cities is possible. Also it is suggested that pupils'aptitude in his/her area of specialized study be thoroughly examined. The relationship between vocational preference and parents'schooling and occupation should also be examined and ample vocational guidance should be provided by the teachers in charge of the special classes (special class teachers, special vocational guidance teachers and general teachers). Such measures could help disabled pupils in choosing their occupation.
