The main purpose of this study is to newly reveal educational values and effects dance offers, mainly based on traditional court dance when developing comprehensively personality of people. It is a part of tries to help young people recover their desirable character which has been probably exposed and damaged by fierce school entrance examination system, sensational media and to solve the issues of alienation, dehumanization and sense of inferiority. Kinds of dance are very various but the court dance of Korea is a synthetic art of music and song and dance, which has a solid and long-standing basis of history, tradition and philosophy over the time. Korean traditional dance, in comparison with that of other countries, thus, contains in itself rich educational content through which teenagers can build up their dignity and get desirable personality and inner power to keep a valuable life.
In this paper, characteristics of Korean court dance are analyzed and then how to instruct with basic elements of the dance is introduced. For this, analyzed are the features of Cheoyong dance which uses a mask and features a dynamic movement with Hansam (a kind of white undershirt preventing sweat) and has abundant folk tales, uniquely among other similar court dances. And based on this, the content of dance programs to cultivate character of young adults is introduced stage by stage. The content is as following.
Firstly, through discussions and introduction of Cheoyong folk story and Cheoyong song, students understand Cheoyong's tolerance and dignity.
Secondly, they play traditional rhythm to understand the meaning of music and participate directly in some performance of slow beat.
Thirdly, they play dynamic basic foot movement and the display of handling Hansam, which makes them understand Cheoyong's benevolence and augustness that led the goddess of smallpox himself to leave.
Fourthly, they experience the Oriental vision of the universe of Yin and Yang and the Five Elements by dancing together according to four directions of north, south, east and west and learn cooperation and consideration for others.
Fifthly, they summarize Cheoyong dance and then announce their own view and appreciate as a creative activity.
Those five guidelines mentioned above will be helpful for the youth to realize their value of being and understand well others' feelings and properly respond to them for the improvement of a comprehensive character.
