The advent of the global low-growth era could not solve the urban
problems that occurred in the era of development and growth, so the
concept of urban regeneration was introduced as a concern for new
urban revitalization. The Seoul Metropolitan Government is also
promoting the ‘Seoul-style urban regeneration’ project based on mature
civic awareness and participation, seeing the city as a ‘place of
coexistence’ rather than a ‘object of development’ amid the compressed
and rapid socio-cultural environment change. Urban regeneration in Seoul
maintains consistency with the 2030 Urban Basic Plan of Seoul, and
selects revitalized areas from the urban regeneration strategic plan linking
the urban regeneration system into economic base type, central city area
type, neighborhood regeneration type, etc. As such, it has a process for
promoting urban regeneration projects.
As the goal of the urban regeneration project, the revitalization of
commercial districts is aimed at revitalizing the local economy by
strengthening the attracting force to enhance the competitiveness of the
region and attracting external visitors. In order to achieve this goal, it is
important to improve the physical environment of the streets in the
commercial area to improve the value of spatial attractiveness for active
activities of local residents and increase in the influx of external visitors.
In particular, the commercial district, which is directly related to the
characteristics of the street, can be seen as a collection of visual elements
representing the image of the region. Among them, the signboard is the
element that strongly reveals the cognitive aspect of the streetscape.
Therefore, the sign improvement project is not a simple maintenance
project, but a visual object that represents the image of the region in the
streetscape and promotes the attractiveness of visits to the commercial
area and is a means of communication. It should be designed to deliver
sufficient satisfaction and emotional stimulation from the user's side and
the visitor's side.
However, the sign improvement project is still focused on the
quantitative reduction and performance of signboards, and the uniform
design and unified signage have hindered the attractiveness of the street.
In addition, it is true that since we are trying to improve a large amount
of signboards in a short period of time, we are unable to deviate from
the limited business budget and the simple process of replacing old
signboards with new ones.
Starting from this problem, this study investigated the cases of sign
improvement projects in urban regeneration projects that were promoted
in a process different from the existing sign improvement projects. This
case is a sign improvement project carried out within the urban
regeneration project area around the 4.19 Intersection. Also, due to the
nature of the urban regeneration project, the role of the urban
regeneration support center installed at the site for the smooth operation
of the project is believed to have been of great help in conflicts and
negotiations among various stakeholders participating in the sign
improvement project.
So, in terms of planning, design, execution, and resultant aspects of
the approach from the perspective of urban regeneration, we examine
what features exist, and as a result, the part that local visitors feel
through the improved signage after the signage improvement project.
Factor analysis was conducted by deriving the components of what this
is. First, preliminary studies were reviewed and the preliminary
components of the sensible factors for sign improvement were derived,
focusing on the characteristics of the 4.19 Urban Regeneration Signboard
Improvement Project, and finally derived into a total of 30 core
components through expert F.G.I.
Through the finally derived core components, the questionnaire items
on the sensible factors after the sign improvement project were composed
on a 7-point Likert scale, and 151 samples were extracted by surveying
the visitors. In the factor analysis process, items that did not meet the
standard factor loading were removed sequentially and analyzed four
times. As a result, a total of 22 principal components were finally
extracted and finally compressed into 4 factors.
The first factor was the identity of the street through the signboard,
the characteristics of the store and the sense of identity, and the name of
the factor was named ‘Identity·Symbolism’. The second factor was a
sensible component related to communication, such as distinguishing
between store information and space perception through signage, and the
factor name was named ‘Information·Visibility’. The third factor was
named ‘Attractiveness·Aesthetics’ as a component for feeling from the
design expression of the signboard, including expression elements such as
color, font, and pictogram, and the aesthetic sense of the size, shape, and
installation location of the signboard. The fourth and final factor is the
overall atmosphere of the commercial street through the signboard,
harmony with the street, and the collective continuity of the commercial
district. It was named 'Harmony·Cooperation' as a component of the
sense of feeling. And incidentally, the part of the demographic survey,
such as gender, age, occupation, and degree of visitation, was additionally
analyzed with statistics.
As a result, the sign improvement project in the declining commercial
district carried out as an integrated and strategic plan within the urban
regeneration project site can have a positive impact on the community.
'Identity·Symbolism', 'Information·Visibility', 'Attraction·Aesthetics', and
'Harmony·Cooperation' were found, suggesting that the signage
improvement project applied to the urban regeneration project is expected
to have various effects on the local community.
