중국에서 성공한 한국영화의 흥행요인 분석 : 리얼리즘 요소를 중심으로 = Analysis of Factors for the successful Korean Films in China: Focusing on realism

In recent years, Korean films have been widely praised in China, and they have not only been well received by Chinese audiences, but also won praises from many Chinese film critics. The Korean film's reflection on history, its concern for reality, and its criticism of society have made Korean films not only achieved huge success both at the box office and in public appraisal in Korea, but also aroused widespread repercussions among Chinese audiences. Chinese audiences said that Korean films are are closer to real life, and Korean films have played an alternative role in compensating Chinese audiences. The success of Korean films in China can be found in terms of realism to find its success factors. From the perspective of realism, this thesis analyzes the characteristics of successful Korean films in China and find out the reasons for success based on realism.
To this end, we must first understands the concepts and characteristics of realism and considers how film directors who advocate realism approach reality in the film and how to implement realism in fiction stories. Then, through the films that have been widely praised in China, such as “Ode to my father", "The Attorney" and "HOPE", they consider the features of realism and analyzed the reasons for success based on realism.
Therefore, conclusions of the study are drawn as follows:
First, with history as a content, history as a common experience of the audience can easily bring the audience a real feeling. South Korea and China have many similarities in the history of modern times. Therefore, many Korean films with modern history can also bring a sense of common to the Chinese audience. Second, the heroization of the ordinary citizens, Korean movies are often close to reality through the daily display of ordinary people's life, through the personalization of writing to reproduce historical reality. And in order to cater to the public's expectations of genre films, Korean films have made a hero of a small social character. The hero mentioned here are different from the hero in Hollywood film, the hero in korean film is a hero created by history and society. Third, the combination of reality and genreic narrative. A successful film should be both artistic and commercial at the same time. Korean films are between record and fiction, represented as popular genres, recording the truth between records and life and social issues.
The success of Korean films in China can not only bring some enlightenment to the Chinese film facing difficulties, but also help the Korean film to open the Chinese market with more enlightenment through the analysis of the success factors. As a popular culture, the film is inevitably important to cater to the masses, but the film as an art should be free and individual. Compared with blind reproduction, it is an important reason for the success of Korean movies to show the true realism attitude to the audience through various factors.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

최근 몇 년 동안 한국영화는 중국 관객들의 많은 사랑을 받았고, 중국의 영화평론가들에게 상당한 호평을 받았다. 한국영화의 역사에 대한 반성, 현실에 대한 주목 그리고 사회에 대한 비판은 본토에서만 흥행의 성과와 거대한 사회적 명성을 얻었을 뿐만 아니라, 중국관객중에서도 광범위한 반향을 일으켰다. 중국 관객들은 중국영화보다 한국영화가 생활과 더 가깝게 느껴진다며 중국관객에게 한국영화는 대체적인 보상 역할을 했다. 한국영화가 중국에서 흥행하는 것은 무엇보다도 리얼리즘의 성격에서 그 원인을 찾을 수 있다. 본 논문은 리얼리즘의 관점에서 중국에서 성공한 한국영화가 어떠한 특징을 갖는지 분석하고 흥행 요인을 도출하고자 한다.
이를 위해 우선 리얼리즘의 개념과 특징을 파악하고 현실에 접근하고자 하는 리얼리스트들의 시도를 살펴보았으며, 허구된 이야기에서 리얼리즘이 어떻게 구현되는지에 대해 살펴보았다. 중국에서 인정받은 한국영화 <국제시장>, <변호인>, <소원>을 통해 리얼리즘 특징을 살펴보고 리얼리즘에 기반한 흥행요인을 분석하였다.
본 연구의 결론은 다음과 같다.
첫째는 역사를 소재로 하는 콘텐츠이다. 이것은 관객이 공통적으로 가지는 경험을 기초로 하여 리얼리티를 쉽게 드러낼 수 있다. 한국과 중국의 현대사에 있어서 공통점이 있기 때문에 역사를 소재로 한 영화가 관객의 공감을 불러일으킬 수 있다. 두 번째는 소시만의 영웅화이다. 소시민은 실제 삶의 전형적인 인물로서, 그들의 평범한 일상을 통해 삶의 진실을 보여주며, 개인적인 서사로 역사를 재현한다. 동시에 한국영화는 대중들이 장르영화에 대한 기대에 부응하기 위해 사회성이 있는 작은 인물을 영웅으로 부각하였다. 여기서 말한 '영웅'은 할리우드 영화 속 자유롭고 전능한 영웅과 달리, 한국영화 속의 영웅은 역사와 사회가 만들어낸 영웅이다. 세 번째는 현실과 장르적 서사의 결합이다. 성공한 영화는 예술성과 상업성을 동시에 지닌다. 한국영화는 기록과 허구 사이를 오가며 현실과 삶의 진실을 기록하고 사회문제에 관심을 가지면서, 대중성 있는 장르로 표현하고 있다.
한국영화가 중국에서 성공한 것은 곤경에 직면한 중국영화에게 발전방향에서의 어떤 계시를 주었다고 할 수 있다. 성공요인에 대한 분석도 한국영화가 중국시장을 개척하는데 있어서 더욱 많은 계시를 얻을 수 있다. 영화는 대중문화로서 물론 대중의 기호에 맞추는게 중요하다. 그러나 영화는 예술로서 개성과 자유, 다양성이 있어야 한다. 흥행공식을 답습한 거보다 리얼리즘 요소를 활용하면서 현실을 드러내기 위한 리얼리즘적 태도를 견지하는 것은 한국영화가 중국에서 인정받는 이유이다.
