    홍문관은 1463년(세조 9)에서 1907년(융희원년)까지 440여 년간 지속된 중앙 관서이다. 궁궐 내부의 서적을 관리하고 문한을 다스리며 왕의 고문에 대비하는 업무를 담당하였다. 본 연구는 홍문관의 세 가지 주요 기능 중 장서 관리 기능에 초점을 맞추어 홍문관 장서의 규모와 성격을 파악하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 현전하는 홍문관 장서 목록과 규장각한국학연구원에 소장된 홍문관 장서 618종에 대한 분석을 실시하였다. 분석결과, 홍문관 장서인은 크게 5개 유형으로 구분할 수 있으며 차별적인 인문을 통해 각 장서인이 사용된 시기를 추정할 수 있었다. 홍문관 장서 618종 가운데 한국본이 451종(73%), 중국본이 167종(27%)을 차지했으며 주제별로 經部 112종, 史部 138종, 子部 112종, 集部 254종으로 확인되었다. 판본에서는 목판본 433종, 금속활자본 129종, 목활자본 30종, 필사본 26종으로 조사되었다. 시기적으로는 17∼18세기에 간행된 서적이 가장 많았으며 현전하는 홍문관 장서의 대부분은 인조조 이후 숙종조를 거치면서 구축된 것으로 보인다. 홍문관 장서는 중국본의 구입과 함께 중앙 관서 및 지방 감영, 외방 관서, 서원, 사찰 등에서 간행된 서적을 수집하여 소장하였다.

    Hongmungwan (弘文館) was a central government office of the Joseon (朝鮮) Dynasty that existed from 1463 to 1907. Hongmungwan was responsible for managing court books, handling documents, and responding to the king’s inquiries. This study aimed to understand the scale and nature of the books held by Hongmungwan. An analysis was conducted on the existing Hongmungwan book catalog and 618 types Hongmungwan books held at the Kyujanggak Institute for Korean Studies. Among the 618 types Hongmungwan books, 451 types (73%) were published in Korea, and 167 types (27%) were published in China. By subject, there were 112 types in Gyeongbu (經部), 138 types in Sabu (史部), 112 types in Zabu (子部), and 254 types in the Jibu (集部). From the perspective of printing methods, there were 433 types woodblock prints, 129 types metal type prints, 30 types wooden movable type prints, and 26 types manuscripts. Many books were published between the 17th and 18th centuries, and most of the books remaining today in the Hongmungwan appear to have been collected during the reigns of Injo (仁祖) to Sukjong (肅宗).
