The thesis investigates the effect of verb type on Korean learners’ processing of English tough constructions (TC) and examines how this effect is modulated by second language (L2) proficiency. TC is known to pose persistent acquisitional challenges for L2 learners due to its non-canonical mapping between syntactic form and thematic role, which often prompts an initial subject-biased interpretation (Cook, 1973). While previous offline studies have reported substantial verb type effects in TC, relatively little research has employed online measures (e.g., eye-tracking), thus leaving open when and how verb-driven cues contribute to reanalysis toward target interpretation (i.e., object interpretation) during online processing of TC. The present study conducted a visual-world eye-tracking experiment to explore whether learners’ real-time processing patterns (i.e., proportions of target fixations) vary depending on the verb employed. Three verb types were included: (1) intransitively-biased optionally transitive verbs (e.g., Loopy is hard to fight), (2) obligatorily transitive verbs (e.g., Loopy is hard to catch), and (3) prepositional verbs (e.g., Loopy is hard to talk to). Forty-three adult Korean learners of English participated in the experiment and were later divided into intermediate and advanced proficiency groups for analysis. The experiment was followed by an acceptability judgment task (AJT), which assessed participants’ knowledge of verb subcategorization bias, and a post picture matching task to examine whether learners’ offline interpretations of TC align with or diverge from their real-time processing patterns. The eye movement data revealed robust effects of verb type across temporal windows. From the earlier stages of processing, learners exhibited increased target fixations for obligatorily transitive verbs, indicating that their verb subcategorization information facilitated more accurate and efficient processing. In contrast, TC involving intransitively-biased optionally transitive or prepositional verbs elicited weaker sensitivity to verb-driven cues. Specifically, learners’ unstable verb subcategorization bias for intransitively-biased optionally transitive verbs may lead to inaccurate interpretation. Regarding prepositional verbs, the relatively reduced target fixations may be attributed to the low perceptual salience and late acoustic realization of prepositions, which could limit their role as a salient object gap cue (Ellis, 2006). Furthermore, advanced learners demonstrated more stable and incremental sensitivity to verb type under certain condition, whereas intermediate learners exhibited transient and inconsistent reliance on verb subcategorization bias. These results suggest that L2 proficiency enhances the automatization of lexical–syntactic integration and promotes a more predictive use of verb-based cues during sentence processing (Hopp, 2006). Lastly, although advanced learners exhibited near-ceiling performance on the post picture matching task across verb types, this offline accuracy was not fully reflected in their eye movement patterns. In real-time processing, advanced learners showed reliable verb type effects, indicating a dissociation between offline knowledge and online use of verb-specific information. These results are compatible with both meaning-based and structure-based accounts of L2 sentence processing. Specifically, they resonate with the First Noun Principle (VanPatten, 2004), which suggests that learners are biased to interpret the first noun phrase as the subject or agent of the sentence. At the same time, they also support approaches that posit L2 learners’ capacity to access abstract syntactic representations during real-time processing (Witzel et al., 2012). Collectively, the findings underscore that L2 processing is primarily driven by meaning-based cues at initial stages, yet learners are capable of exploiting abstract syntactic representations in real time, which facilitates the efficient processing of non-canonical and syntactically challenging constructions.
