게르만족의 민족대이동기의 생활상 고찰

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 글은 타키투스의 『게르마니아』를 바탕으로 초기 게르만족의 생활상을 고찰했다. 게르만족은 다양한 종족으로 구성되어 있었으며 민족대이동도 장기간 걸쳐 진행되었다. 게르만 사회는 ‘집회 Thing’라는 제도를 통하여 민주적으로 운영되었으며 계층의 차이도 로마제국처럼 크지 않았다. 타키투스가 로마 신의 이름을 빌려 기술하고 있듯이 게르만족은 다신교를 믿고 자연을 신성시했다. 게르만족은 매우 소박하고 성실하게 살았으며 일부일처제와 소가족제도를 유지하고 도덕적으로 매우 엄격했다. 마지막으로 게르만 족의 장례제도와 관련하여 그들은 초기에는 화장을 선호했으나 로마의 영향으로 서기 3세기 이후에는 토장을 주로 시행했다.
민족대이동기의 게르만 사회에서 보듯이 게르만족은 결코 야만적이지 않았고 허약하지 도 않았다. 그들은 좀 더 나은 문화를 접하면 기꺼이 자기 문화를 포기하고 더 나은 문화를 받아들였다. 바로 이것이 게르만족이 역사 속에서 주도적 역할을 하게 된 요인이라고 생각한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

In this thesis I studied uoon the living manner of the Germanic peoples in the Migration Period on the basis of Tacitus’『Germania』. The Germanic peoples consisted of various tribes who had different origins or backgrounds. Their migration has been going on for several centuries.
The old Germanic tribes had a democratic assembly system, i.e. ’Thing’. It functioned as a political consultative conference and a court of justice. It also contributed to ritual purposes. The disparities in social status were not so considerable as those in the Roman Empire. For example, the Gennanic slaves were not house slaves such as seen in the Roman Empire, but were obligated to manage the farmland of their lords and to pay the land rent.
As Tacitus referred to the Germanic Gods with the Roman Gods’ names, the religion of the old Germanic peoples was polytheism. They believed in the gods of the nature. For them the forest and the river were sacral places. They lived very faithfully and plainly. They sticked to monogamy and small-family system They behaved with strict morality. Lastly they preferred the cremation in the context of the funeral rites to the burial up to the 2. century (AD). After this time the inhumation was predominating, which was surely affected from the outside. Since the luxurious goods began to be imported from the Roman Empire, many Gennanic graves also included rich artifacts such as a favorite piece of jewelry or clothing.
As the Germanic culture in the Migration Period showed, the Germanic peoples were neither barbarian, nor politically weak. When they contacted a superior strange culture, they accept it gladly giving up their own, so that they could become stronger. That was the reason, I think, why the Germanic peoples could play a leading role in European history.
