The weight of an aircraft greatly affects its fuel efficiency. Airlines are obliged to load reserve fuel which is composed of alternate fuel, final reserve fuel and contingency fuel for operational safety reasons in addition to the mission fuel. While reserve fuel can increase operational safety, it also increases the total weight of the aircraft and accordingly its fuel burn. This research focuses on a practical analysis by utilizing loaded fuel and fuel burn data of a specific airline to determine whether reserve fuel can be decreased while maintaining adequate safety level. Using past fuel uplift/fuel burn data, statistical analysis is performed on uplifted fuel and actual fuel burn to find how much fuel penalty and emissions can be reduced by minimizing the amount of reserve fuel, and ultimately to find feasibility in reducing reserve fuel.
