This paper examines the extent of ritualistic authority granted by King Yeongjo to Crown Prince Sado during his regency, focusing on the implementation of the Jongmyo ritual. In the <Sok-Oruibo>, a ritual book compiled in the 27th year of King Yeongjo's reign (1751), the ‘Regulations for the Crown Prince's Proxy Participation in the Jongmyo Ritual’ were included. This confirms the distinction in the regulations between the direct participation of the king in the ritual and the proxy participation of the crown prince in the ritual.
Moreover, upon examining the process in which various Jongmyo rituals were conducted during the regency period, it was observed that the majority of significant rituals were performed under the direction of King Yeongjo, while Crown Prince Sado either assisted King Yeongjo in the ceremonial procedures or temporarily co-led the ceremonies with him. Therefore, the ritualistic authority of Crown Prince Sado was highly limited, and it can be summarized that he remained in a role assisting King Yeongjo in the ceremonial procedures.
