This paper examines the concept of the Jungwon(中原), the scope of the Jungwon Area, and the process of Silla’s territorialization of the Jungwon Area. In Silla, Jungwon had the meaning of a local name referring to today’s Chungju region, but the scope of the Jungwon historical and cultural sphere is generally understood to encompass Chungcheongbuk-do, as well as southern Gyeonggi-do and Gangwon-do, and northern Gyeongsangbuk-do. As such, the scope of the Jungwon-do(Chungwon-do) established in the 14th year of King Seongjong of Goryeo(995) is drawing attention in relation to the reasonable argument for understanding the scope of the Jungwon historical and cultural sphere. As a result of verifying the location of 13Ju(州) 42Hyeon(縣) belonging to Jungwon-do, it can be confirmed that the Jungwon historical and cultural sphere covered Chungcheonbuk-do, southern Gyeonggi-do and Gangwon-do, eastern Chungcheongnam-do, and parts of Sejong Special Self-Governing City, and northern Gyeongsangbuk-do, and in the early Goryeo Dynasty, the concept of the Jungwon was changed to refer to the scope of the wide area located in the center of the country, including Chungju. In the late 5th century, Silla built mountain fortresses in the Sobaek Mountains in preparation for Goguryeo’s southward advance, and began to organize these regions into administrative villages(行政村) and administrative fortress(行政城). Furthermore, the work of territorialization of the Jungwon Area was carried out step by step until various regions of Chungcheongnam-do, Yeongi-myeon and Jeonui-myeon of Sejong Special Self-Governing City, which were ruled by the Tang Dynasty, were organized into Gun(郡) and Hyeon of Silla in 671.
