전병훈 연구의 문제와 쟁점(1) -최근 논쟁에서의 몇가지 문제를 중심으로- = Problems and Issues on the Jeon Byeonghun Research(1) -Around the Recent Controversies and Research Ethics-

This research reviews the issues in researching the philosophy by Jeon Byeonghun, a reputable scholar and expert of late-Joseon, active in China and discusses the recommended direction the research field must take moving forward for its research ethics. Many of the research literature he left in his dynamic life in the turbulent modern times have lost its original form or disappeared. The act of collecting, organizing, and analyzing the segmented literature without its original context is not easy. Dojinsuon (道眞粹言) said to be written by Jeon Byeonghun only maintains its title, however, has not surfaced anywhere. I have discovered the writings by Jeon Byeonghun from Sunbulgajinsuorok (仙佛家眞粹語錄) and has historically researched its relation with this writing. I have also done some historical research on his life and Chinese poetry, which have not been widely understood. In this research I review the recently suggested criticism and suggest the necessity of accurate quotations of the previous researches along with the problems in the Jeon Byeonghun research. In particular, in the case of Jeon Byeonghun, as there is no solid compilation of the original data, it poses risks related to misinterpretation and misunderstanding, and it is inevitable that scholars have different opinions in interpretation. When discussing and evaluating researched previously done, it is crucial to keep this in mind and have aneutral, objective perspective with accurate citation. Recently in our society, plagiarism is an important issue. Among these issues, the necessary point to be considered in our academia is not such technical plagiarism, but rather plagiarism that is not too obvious or idea copying. These are the area where people must rely on subjective opinions or that may cause mutual arguments, in turn fundamentally related to research ethics. In this light, the research must not be lazy in establishing his/her own opinions, as well as be hostile against the evaluation and citation of previously-done researches that support him/her.
