The purpose of this thesis is to investigate the characteristics of Choi Yoan's humor novels. To this end, this thesis tried to examine the background of appearance and peculiarities of the humor novels, and then analyze the juvenile image which is the core of the author's humor novels.
A humor novel is a entertaining and humorous genre as juveniles not only unmask the pretence and hypocrisy of the grown-ups but also behave vivaciously. The characters, highly individual and represented well worry and life of youth, were popular with readers. While it is presumed that in the late 1940's a humor novel appears in the children’s literature world, since the middle of 1950's it advances in earnest. The reason for establishing a genre‘ own peculiarity is closely connected with the contemporary situation after the Korean War. It was a period in which one sought to overcome the colonial experience and the scars of war and then actively discussed ways to found a new country and society. On the one hand, the patriarchal and unilateral tradition still wielded strong influence. On the other, there was a growing consensus about the need to build a democratic society. These changes bring the emergence of the genre resisting the older generation and reflecting the voice of the student. Moreover, it provided the foundation of this genre's development that the reading subscribers expanded owing to the rapid growth of the number of middle and high school students, and novelist for an humor novel made an appearance.
Choi is one of the most representative writers leading glory days of humor novels from the 1950's to the 1970's. He personifies the pleasant and autonomous juvenile image in his novels, thereby showing an advanced character who is changed from the passive juvenile to modern and progressive one in the children’s literary world.
Above all, youths are not the objects ordered by adults but the subjects acting on their own in Choi's novels. They have their wish fulfilled with an active attitude. They also endeavors to speak for the weak constantly by trying to communicate with a figure of authority. But his works are criticized for having a schematic plot about characters because they have the universal value inherently rather than are inexperienced youths coming to realize the independent being in conflict with the unlawful world.
Next, in his novels, most youths overcome the impasse for themselves instead of receiving adults' help, when in trouble. Because grown-ups are largely helpless or sitting by and watch the juveniles have difficulty. Therefore youths have to substitute for father. After protagonists have completed their assignments, they do not want to raise to a patriarchal position but stay in a son‘s as it is. They are actually acting as a mediator who harmonize with the opposite. This demonstrates the author's consciousness that disrupt the vertical authority and then aspires the horizontal relation.
Finally, Choi describes enrich the various youth's conflicts, worries, and dreams in everyday life, and proves what these signify to identify for them. It is quite a contrast that youth as a social being, who has to work with parents and concern about his living, has been overemphasized in the children’s literary world before. Because author believes to grow youth through having a connection with ordinary desires, in addition to awakening as a social being.
As above, Choi shows us in a humorous way the process by which the enjoyable and independent youth develop the identity as a juvenile by means of the harsh realities and a variety of experience in their daily life in his humor novels.
