This study, based on online experiment, explores how the uses of both sensational and deceptive headline news (clickbait news) affect the attitudes toward ‘news in general’ free from sensationalism and deception, and the intentions to use it. The results are as follows: 1) Compared with control groups, the participants exposed to both sensational and deceptive headlines rated more negatively the quality of news which was neither sensational nor deceptive, and felt more negative emotions. 2) The mediating effect was also confirmed only with respect to perceptions of the news quality; exposure to both sensational and deceptive headlines significantly had a negative effect on assessments of the quality of ‘news in general’ and user’s emotions. Besides, assessments of the news quality were negatively associated with the intentions to use ‘news in general’. These findings have crucial implications for the online news production processes. Although news that deceives users can be selected inadvertently in the information market, it will be shunned away from users’ attention in the long run. In particular, the fact that the clickbait news may have a negative impact on the uses of news that even conforms to journalistic norms implies that the clickbait headlines may cause distrust in the news media overall, putting the entire news ecosystem in danger.
