      다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The goal of this study is to analyze the characteristics of the landscpae, function, and people's use, and to purpose utilities of the windbreak forest as an element of a settlement near the east sea region in Kangwon province
There were crop losses caused by the wind in the Chosun king's records and local strong winds whose speed exceed 13 9m/s near the east sea region in Kangwon province for five years from 1991 to 1995 occurred frequently in spring and winter season Almost westerly winds were prominent when strong winds occurred, so the effect of Taebaek Mountains seems to be important
Results show that the number of forests were constructed in order to protect against local strong winds there are almost forests were constructed in order to protect against local strong winds There are almost 25 windbreak forests near the east sea region in Kangwon province The types of forests are classified with the forests(1) points) constructed along the seaside in order to protect against east wind and the forests(14 points) constructed across the gorge in order to protect against west wind. The forests constructed along the seaside which look like the liner type are usually large size And the forests constructed across the gorge which look like the liner and rectangular type are smaller than the forests constructed along the seaside
      Results are summarized as follows,
Firstly, I think that these forests has been able to remain until today because of it's practical function. So we must consider not only the preservation of themselves, but also the wide area planning(include settlements, fields, waters, and mountains)
Secondly, Because non-physical meanings of the forests are almost disappearing or destroying now, it is necessary for us to collect data related to them in order to rehabilitate our historic heritage And This is the way to connect people with forests and to live in mutual dependence with the environment
Thirdly, the development of programs such as foods, events, and traditional games(a tug of war, trading on the spirits of the terrain, a farm music, swing, Korean wrestling, etc) will promote people's visits into the forests
At last, it is necessary for us to remember the meaning of these forests in urban park planning and design, to preserve and rebuild them, and to construct them in the near future.
