Instruction media are the media used to convey educational messages and contents. Instruction media can be classified in various ways, depending on the criteria. What one should keep in mind in using instruction media is that the selection of media is more important than the use of media, and that the effect of using instruction media is determined by the complex relationships among the diverse factors in instruction, such as the purpose of instruction, the learners, the methodology, and the assignments, rather than the medium itself. The results of a survey of Chinese schoolteachers who teach writing show that such teachers perceive the importance of the use of instruction media, and that they are already using various such media in their instruction. Their use of such media is limited, however, by the lack of instructional content for such media and the lack of professional ability to utilize such media. In this paper, the status of utilization of instruction media in the 7th middle school Chinese writing course of study is surveyed and analyzed based on the third and fourth stages of the ASSURE model, which involve the selection, reorganization and production of instruction materials, and the utilization of media and instruction materials, respectively. Thus, in accordance with the core factors of instruction on and learning of the contents of a given course of study, what media are selected and produced and how such media have been utilized in instruction are herein surveyed and analyzed. Ifinstructors select, produce and utilize the media that are suitable to their instruction objectives and instruction methods, students will participate more actively and creatively in class work and Chinese writing instruction can be more effectively and efficiently carried out, which will contribute to the achievement of the goal of Chinese writing instruction.
