뷰리당과 중세의 물리주의

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 글은 14세기 파리 대학에서 활동했던 인물들 가운데 가장 중요한 철학자라고 평가되는 뷰리당에게서 물리주의의 단초를 찾고자 한다. 뷰리당은 ?영혼에 관한 토론문제?에서 아리스토텔레스의 해석을 둘러싼 세 가지 경쟁이론, 즉 알렉산더 아프로디시아스, 아베로에스, 그리고 가톨릭 신앙의 견해를 구별하는 과정에서 알렉산더의 입장을 따라 인간 영혼이 질료에 내재하고, 질료의 가능태에서 도출되며, 물질적으로 연장되어 있으며, 여럿이 되고 생성·소멸될 수 있다고 주장한다. 뷰리당은 인간 영혼이 동물의 영혼처럼 물질적이라는 주장이 자연 이성을 따라 논증적 추론을 통해 도출될 수 있는 철학적 결론으로 간주한다. 그럼에도 그는 자신의 그리스도교 신앙에 위배될 수 있는 가능성을 인정하고 그 결론과 정반대되는 신앙의 견해를 참인 것으로 받아들인다. 이런 점에서 뷰리당의 물리주의는 ‘철학적 물리주의’라는 꼬리표를 달아야 한다는 것이 필자의 해석이다.
