One of the layers of the well-stratified palaeolithic site is radio-carbondated to be old 30,690±3,000 years before the present. There are three more layers above, and many more layers below the dated layer. The uppermost layer carries Aurignacien tradition, and the layer below shows Mousterien character.
It is interesting to see the chronological sequences in the stratigraphy of Sokchang-ni site, however, it is necessary to extend researches in various fields in order to reconstruct the cultural contents and environmental conditions of each layer.
The prospect for finding more palaeolithic sites is bright. We were able to make surface finds in the areas in Kyonggi-do, Chungchong-namdo, Kyongsang-pukto, and Seoul.
From typological viewpoints the finds can be classified into at least three traditions of Europe and two traditions of China. There were tools comparable respectively to :
(1) crude biface or pick of Terra Amata at Nice, French Riviera;
(2) Acheulian hand axe
(3) Mousterien tranchet-edged hand axe of High Lodge, Suffolk, England;
(4) Grattoir or round scraper of Aurignacien Typique Ⅱ of France. There are also of some Choukoutien and T’ingsun traditions.
It may be safely said from these finds that the wealth of palaeolithic cultures in Korea will certainly shed light in the comparative study of prehistoric culture of Asia as well as Europe.
