A study of Archeological chemistry on ancient glasses which has been exhumed and collected across Korea have been undertaken. On this paper, the nation is partitioned into thirteen regions by antient tombs and a total of 315 sample pieces has been analyzed to determine their chemical composition and scientific properties, and in turn to investigate the historical variance of the ancient glasses in Korea. This paper also intends presenting systematic and scientific methods how to analyze ancient glasses.
Analyses were conducted on polished sections through the samples which were examined in a scanning electron microscope(SEM) using the backscattered electron
mode and operating at 20 KeV and 1.0 nA. The phases present could, thus, be distinguished on the basis of differences in their atomic number which are revealed by different shades of grey. The major chemical compositions of the samples of glass fragment were determined using the attached a energy dispersive spectrometer(EDS), areas in the section of up to about 50×50 ㎛2 being analysed with 150 seconds of time. Areas were specially selected to avoid weathering layers of the sample and only analyses with totals of 98∼102% were accepted. Microstructure was observed by optical microscope, polarizing microscope, SEM and micro X-ray diffractometer. Lead isotope ratios of same glasses found in Korea were also analyzed, and these data were compared to the lead isotope ratios of glasses from Korea, China and Japan known to have been worked in the past.
The Korean ancient glass can be divided into such major categories as lead glass, potash glass, soda glass and mixed alkali glass by its composition and distinct variation in its composition has been observed with the changes of the times. Lead glass and potash glass preceded soda glass, and potash glass had dramatically disappeared from the 3rd century A. D., and soda glass become a main component of glass beads during the era of the three Kingdoms beginning on the 2nd century A. D. This study takes mixed alkali glass, which is composed of over 5% Na2 O and K2O, as a new meaningful category of the Korean ancient glass component.
In general, the composition of the ancient glass varied widely with antient tombs, but samples from some tombs reported certain composition. It is therefore discovered that the ancient glass reflects the cultural variance of the ancient times by regions. Tahori in Ch'angwo˘n, Kyo˘ngsangnamdo, Imdangdong in Kyo˘ngsan and Paldangdong in Taegu, Kyo˘ngsangbukdo can be grouped as one cultural area with a major component of potash glass. Kyeso˘ ng in Ch'angnyo˘ng, Kyo˘ng-sangnamdo and Tomb of King Muryo˘ong in Kongju, Ch'ungch'o˘ ngnamdo can also be grouped as one cultural area with a major component of soda glass.
Lead glass is generally divided into two groups; PbO-SiO2 and PbO-BaO-SiO2. In this study, however, it is classified into three types based on the content of CaO and Al2O3. Type Ⅰ is found at the PbO-SiO2 group, while types Ⅱ and III were branched from the PbO-BaO-SiO2 group. In comparison with type Ⅱ, type III contains more CaO by at least 2% and also Na2O and MgO relatively higher. So explicit differences in composition has been observed between types II and III. In terms of the changes with the times, type II appeared early times of lead-barium glass in Korea and lasted up to the late 3rd century A. D., whereas type III is presumed to be lead-barium glass which newly appeared after the 3rd century A. D. Potash glass is divided into three groups by the content of CaO and Al2 O3. Type I which contains not more than 3% CaO and Al2O3 is recognized as a main component of potash glass and commonly in purple blue (PB or Co color). Type II contains less than 1% CaO and about 3∼5% Al2O3 and is usually found from glass in blue green (BG) and pale green blue (gB or Cu color). Type Ⅲ contains at least 5% CaO and is analysed from yellowish glass beads during the 17th
century A. D. For potash glass, glass in purple blue contains more MnO by average 2% than in other colors and the content of CuO varies with times. The CuO content remarks as high as 0.55∼1.7 % before the 2nd century A. D., while less than 0.1% afterwards.
Based on 5% CaO and Al2O3, soda glass is classified into five types; LCA-A, LCA-B, LCHA, HCLA and HCA according to stabilizer, and based on 1.5% MgO and K2O the properties of the soda source is divided into four types; LMK, LMHK, HMK and KMLK. Most glass beads are presumed to be made with minerals and the categorization by stabilizers and source properties is based on glass colors. For instance, LCA-B and HCLA of stabilizers and LMK of source properties are in Co color while LCA-A and LCHA of stabilizers and LMHK of source properties is in Cu color.
Statistical data obtained from principal component analysis of 23 sample piece is checked the relation of six glass containers which were unearthed from the Hwangnam Daech'ong South. And these glass are HCLA with a large portion of CaO but a little Al2O3, and the source of its soda is HMK. Such composition is specific and has not been detected nowhere else. Accordingly, this soda glass is very likely to be introduced from outside rather than domestic one. Gold foil bead appearing from the 3rd century A. D. is also classified as the HCLA type, however its soda source proves to be LMK. It suggest that gold foil bead and glass-containers used different raw materials each other. Three pieces founded at Okso˘ngri in Pohang, Kyo˘ngsangbukdo are classified as LCA-A and LCHA types and its source is composed of LMHK. From this results, these type of soda glass is presumed to be made in Korea.
Microstructure has exposed the existence a variety of faults including stone, knot, cord, heterogeneity as well as blowholes(for example, bubble, blister, seed) within the ancient glass. Seeing that coloration substance of yellow glass is crystallized PbSnO3 consisting of lead and tin, data from microstructure will help to clarify the raw materials and manufacturing process of antient glass.
For some of lead glass, the origin and properties of glass sample have been investigated through the analysis of lead isotope ratios. By adding the ratio data of 18 pieces which was already reported to the results from 22 sample pieces of this study, data on a total of 40 pieces have been collected and compared together. There is no variation in the lead glass by region, times and its composition, but the isotopic ratios can be divided into three types. In addition, the distribution of isotope ratios in this study shows linear relationship, and produces a correlation formula, Y = 2.56 X - 0.067 22 with the method of least squares. It suggests that lead isotope ratios may utilize any scientific data on the origin place of the glass provided that scrupulous care about a method to interpret the given information is practiced.
As compared with the isotopic ratios collected from China and Japan, lead glass widely spreads out across China, Korea and Japan in this order. It indicates that Korea had cultural exchanges with China more extensively than with Japan. Also, lead glass from the Mir˘uksaji in Iksan, Cho˘llabukdo remarks no particular distinction but spreads out in a different pattern than in China, and even shows close relations with the lead isotope ratios measured from some ancient Japanese glass.
