This study was undertaken to discuss the nature and situtional factors of leadership.
Leadership is an attempt at interpersonal influence, directed through the communication process, toward the attainment of some goal or goals, Leadership may be considered from three related perspectives;interaction system, influence system, and power system.
Five functions of the group leader are identified which are common to leaders of all groups: (1) advance the purpose of the group, (2) administrate, (3) inspire greater activity or set the pace for the group, (4) make the individual member feel secure of his place in the group, and (5) act without regard to one's own selfinterest.
Factors producing leadership are as follows; (1) appointment, (2) amount of communication, (3) type of communication, (4) communication networks, and (5) personal characteristics of leaders.
The situation concept embraces both (1) The objective conditions under which action occures and (2) the values and attitudes which characterize the individual group members who participate in group activity and which consequently not only partially determine that activity, but are used by these same members to evaluate its success.
While individual charactersitcs are a group of variables that influence preferred leadership, situational differences also affect leadership perferences. These situational factors can be broken down into (1) the nature of the task, (2) the formal structure of the organizations, (3) the primary work group, (4) the size of the unit, and (5) normative forces and organizational goals.
In conclusion, the study of leadership with the situational factors forcused is critical to the understanding of (sport) performance because leadership is instrumental in enhancing the motivational state of the group (athlete and/or team).
