The aim of this study is to determine the influences of reliability and likability for teacher on punishment attribution and effects in children. In doing so, the author investigated the punishment attribution of children based on reliability and likability of teachers and the differences in punishment influences through questionnaire.
The questions provided in this study are as follows: (1) Does the attribution against punishment differ according to the reliability for teachers?, (2) Does the attribution against punishment differ according to the likability for teachers?, (3) Does the effects of punishment differ according to the attribution of children against punishment?
The 270 fourth, fifth, and sixth graders in an elementary school located in Kyungki Province were asked to answer to unsigned questionnaire in this study. After teacher reliability and likability were measured, punishment attribution and effect were surveyed when a simulated situation in which the subjects were punished was provided. The results of the analysis of the collected data were as follows:
First, when the reliability for teacher was higher, the subjects expressed internal attribution that they deserved to be punished. They did not blame getting punishment on teachers, and felt less anger or displeasure for teachers. In addition, they showed significant changes in their activities and corrected their following actions because they regretted and reflected on what they had done and felt they would behave themselves well.
Second, when the likability for teacher was higher, the subjects expressed internal attribution that they deserved to be punished. They did not blame getting punishment on teachers or situations, and felt sorry for teachers when they were punished. And they showed significant changes in their activities and corrected their following actions because they regretted and reflected on what they had done.
Third, when the subjects expressed internal attribution that they deserved to be punished, they did not have negative emotion such as anger or displeasure against teachers and regretted what they had done to decide they would behave themselves well. Besides, after getting punishment, they reflected on their misbehavior to significantly correct their activities. Considering the tendency of internal attribution was increased when the reliability and likability for teachers were higher, it can be said that the reliability and likability for teachers had significant influences on the effects of punishment.
The results of this study proved that the positive relationship between teachers and children had influences on the effects of punishment, which was in controversy. The importance of reliability between teachers and children in the spot was identified in this study. Therefore, it is necessary to create environments in which the educational subjects trust and respect each other as soon as possible in order to maximize educational effects.
