아카데미 회의주의: 아르케실라오스와 카르네아데스

국문 초록 (Abstract)

기원전 3-2세기 중기 아카데미의 아르케실라오스와 신(新)아카데미의 카르네아데스 철학에 나타난 ‘아카데미 회의주의’(Academic Scepticism)는 전통적인 플라톤 철학에 대한 단순한 왜곡이 아니라, 플라톤 사후 900년간(플라톤 아카데미가 세워진 기원전 387년경부터 유스티니아누스 황제에 의해서 아카데미가 폐쇄되던 기원후 529년까지)에 걸쳐 전개된 아카데미 플라톤주의의 역사에 있어서 한 흐름, 특히 헬레니즘 시기의 새로이 형성되어 발전하였던 플라톤주의의 한 흐름이다. 이런 점에서 본 연구는 종전에 부정적으로 인식되어 오던 아카데미 회의주의 철학에 대한 새로운 해석을 시도하여, 그것이 고대 플라톤주의(Ancient Platonism)의 역사에 있어서 중심적인 역할을 수행한 유의미한 철학임을 고찰하였다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Apart from modern scepticism mainly focused on epistemological approaches, the scepticism of the Academy, which contains "epochē and ataraxia" as core ideas, lays considerable emphasis on the intellectual attitude on life and its immediate practice. This research gives heed to the fact that the scepticism of the Academy among the Hellenistic era, affected the history of Western philosophy in a meaningful way. Ancient scepticism in the Hellenism could be explicitly defined the art (techē) for life. This view can be divided on two currents; One is the scepticism of the Academy, representative as Archesilaus, Carneades and the other is highly typical of Pyrrhonism which Sextus Empiricus played a leading role. In this research, I studied the scepticism of the Academy.
