The purpose of this study is to examine how the meta-cognitive strategy can be used well in web-based level of self-directed learning environment. For it, in this study, the effect in academic achievement and self-directed learning attitude was analyzed depending on the meta-cognitive strategy.
Usefulness of Meta-cognition is excellent in solving problems such as the loss of directional sense and cognitive overload that learners often cause in web-based level of self-directed learning environment, which is required to continuous decision making about self-learning process. However, literatures which examined meta-cognitive strategy in regard to web-based level of self-directed learning environment are scant. Therefore, this study provides the specific meta-cognitive strategy to minimize and support several cognitive problems in web-based level of self-directed learning environment.
In addition, according to previous researches, the strategy, which trains learners to obtain meta-cognition regardless of learning content and helps learners to generate useful information themselves, results in more effective learning than the strategy, which links meta-cognitive thinking way with learning contents in web-based level of self-directed learning environment and provides learners with information about strategic usefulness. Therefore, this study provides learning plans as the meta-cognitive strategic train and examines if learning plans are effective in academic achievement and self-directed learning attitude.
To achieve such research goals, this study establishes research problems like followings;
1) "Is there significant difference in academic achievement between the group, which is provided with learning plans as the meta-cognitive strategy train in web-based level of self-directed learning environment, and the group, which is not provided with that?"
2) "Is there significant difference in self-directed learning attitude between the group, which is provided with learning plans as the meta-cognitive strategy train in web-based level of self-directed learning environment, and the group, which is not provided with that?"
For solving such research problems, forty second grade students in computer department of high schools, which are specialized in electronic field and are located in Seoul, participated in this study as the research subjects. They were randomly assigned to 2 different experimental groups, according to meta-cognitive strategy. Independent sample t-test was used to examine the hypothesis, preliminary test of academic achievement and self-directed learning attitude was used to examine the equality between experimental groups and posterior test was used to analyze the results of academic achievement and self-directed learning attitude.
The results of this study are like followings;
First, the result showed that experimental group(M = 65.40), which was provided with the information about the learning strategy as the meta-cognitive strategy train in web-based level of self-directed learning environment, had statistically significant difference in academic achievement than control group(M = 53.20), which was provided with that (t [40] = 2.68, p < .05).
Second, the results showed that experimental group(M = 82.25), which was provided with the information about the learning strategy as the meta-cognitive strategy train in web-based level of self-directed learning environment, had statistically significant difference in self-directed learning attitude than control group(M = 74.35), which was provided with that (t [40] = 2.09, p < .05).
In regard to results of this study, in the future, following studies should consider next points. First, following studies should select more various research problems and learners and should research to obtain more clear implication. Second, following studies have to train the meta-cognitive strategy over longer period and have to perform quantitative and qualitative research at once. Third, following studies need to identify distinctive features of learners which can appear in web-based class or computer-used class, and need to research how such features relate to the meta-cognitive strategy. Fourth, following studies should research the degree of meta-cognitive use depending on the level of learners.
