    This investigation was undertaken to clearify the mechanism of the stimulated respiration caused by K^+ in brain tissue, using Warburg's manometric apparatus. The oxygen consumption of the slices of cerebral cortex, cerebellum of rat was studied in Krebs-Ringer bicarbonate medium (pH 7.4) under 100% oxygen phase.
    The addition of 140mM KCl in medium stimulated remarkably oxygen consumption rate in brain tissue, while the addition of 120mM sucrose were not stimulated.
    These results indicated that the K load and increased metabolism could reflects an increased energy expenditure involved active Na-K pump either by neurons or by glia cells or both.
