뒤늦은 증언: 난징 대학살 시편과 미국시의 ‘공간’ 재편

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 일차적으로 시와 역사의 만남을 통하여 시가 구현할 수 있는 미학적 성취가 시의 정치로 기능하는 방식을 살핀다. 한 인터뷰에서 윙 텍 럼은 자신의 시가 “시간의 단면을 묘사한 것”이라고 자신의 시적 재현의 방법론을 간결하게 말한 바 있는데, 시간의 단면을 묘사하는 시는 사진 시 (photo poems)로 달리 표현될 수 있다. ‘사진 시’ 혹은 가족 앨범(family photo album) 등의 개념은 홀로코스트 문학 등에서 많이 논의된 개념인데, 온갖 다양한 전쟁과 학살을 거쳐 온 20세기 역사와 이를 반추하는 포스트메모리(의식적인 본인의 기억 안에 있지 않지만 남아있는 기억이라는 의미로 허쉬(Marianne Hirsch)가 처음 말한 개념으로 홀로코스트, 한국전쟁, 9/11 등 역사적 비극을 반추하는 재현의 방식에 있어서 많이 원용)가 이미지의 시적 변용에 어떻게 개입되는지를 살필 것이다.
이를 위해 본 연구는 1. 가족 앨범에 자리하는 구전서사의 시적 재현, 2. 사진 시와 다큐멘터리, 카메라 기법이 윙 텍 럼의 시 언어에 작용하는 방식, 3. 증언에서 사진 언어와 시 언어의 차이, 특히 시적 언어가 갖는 증언의 힘에 주목해보았다. 연구에 대한 이론적 배경으로는 포스트메모리에 대한 허쉬의 논의 외에도 미셸 드 서투, 쥬디스 버틀러, 수전 손택, 지젝 등 문화와 역사의 재현, 문학과 영상, 몸의 재현에 있어서 시선과 응시의 문제에 대해서 예리한 문제의식을 던져 준 이론가들을 함께 참조하였다. 본 연구는 국가의 경계를 넘어 확장된 공간으로 재탄생한 난징 대학살, 뒤늦은 증언으로서의 시적 재현이 소수자 시학으로 미국을 재편하는 정치적 공간이 될 수 있음을 살피는 것이었다. 요약컨대, 아카이브 등 공적 기록 언어가 시와 만나는 접점에 주목하여 시가 사적인 영역에 머무는 문학 언어가 아니라 공감의 확장, 나아가 역사의 확장에 기여하게 되는 자리임을 짚어보았다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This project questions what would be the space of new poetics in these inter-disciplinary era, how archive, historical documents, and testimony affect and reconstruct the poetry writing and reading practices. Expecially focusing on Wing Tek Lum’s <The Nanjing Massacre: Poems> this project investigates how both history and literature can be reawakened in the third space of new poetics. In an interview, Wing Tek Lum says that his poetry is to describe "the slices of time." Poems describing the slices of time can be said to get the form of photo poems. As a series of snapshots not just of human cruelty but also of human compassion, the poetry book stands a vivid landscape of the buried, the forgotten, the unsaid, the unacceptable, the unpleasant. For the project, I connect my interest in photo album, camera angle strategies in literature, and documentary poetics with the multi-layered time space of the Nanjing. Documentary is the presentation and representation of actual facts and documentary poetics is the poetic realization of the act of documentation in a way that makes it vivid to people who do not know the facts.
