한자어 ‘잠깐(暫間)’의 어휘사 = A Historical Study on the Sino-Korean Word ‘잠깐(暫間)’

국문 초록 (Abstract)

‘잠깐’이 ‘暫間’에서 유래한 한자어라는 것은 익히 알려진 사실이지만, ‘暫間’의 기원과 관련해서는 견해가 엇갈린다. 이에 본고는 중국 수(隋)나라 시기의 의학 저서인 <제병원후론>(諸病源候論)에서 ‘暫間’이 확인된다는 점, <제병원후론>이 조선에 유입되었음을 입증하는 <조선왕조실록>의 기록 등에 근거하여 ‘잠깐’의 원어인 ‘暫間’이 중국계 차용어일 가능성을 논증하였다.
아울러 ‘잠깐’의 의미 변화와 관련해서는 해당 어형이 중국계 차용어임을 전제로, [단기 지속]의 의미로부터 17세기 초엽에 인지동사와 공기하는 맥락에서 [적은 정도]와의 양립 구도를 형성한 것으로 보았다. 이어 17세기 중엽에 이르러서는 [적은 수량]의 의미를 매개로, [단기 지속]과 [적은 정도]로 두루 해석되는 ‘교량 맥락’을 대거 형성하였다가 17세기 말의 ‘동의 경쟁’ 속에서 [적은 정도]의 의미가 점차 약화되어, 18세기 후기부터는 ‘잠깐’이 [단기 지속]의 의미로만 특화된 것으로 보았다.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

The Korean adverb ‘잠깐’ is widely understood to originate from the Chinese characters ‘暫間’, however, the origin of ‘暫間’ itself is divided in different views. This paper argues for its Chinese origin, drawing evidence from documents in the Sui Dynasty, for example, Chinese medical text ‘諸病源候論’, written during the Sui dynasty. And the ‘朝鮮王朝實錄’ offers an additional confirmation. This chronology strongly supports that ‘暫間’, the etymological root of ‘잠깐’, entered Korean as a borrowing from Chinese.
Additionally, this study investigates the semantic evolution of ‘잠깐’, an aspect hitherto underexplored. Our analysis posits that ‘잠깐’, derived from Chinese ‘暫間’, via reanalysis.
First, ‘잠깐’ conveyed the meaning of [short-term duration]. By the early 17th century, however, its occurrence with cognitive verbs facilitated the development of a semantic duality that comprised both [short-term duration] and [a small/limited degree]. Second, the mid-17th century witnessed ‘잠깐’ developing a prevalent ‘bridging context’ through the intermediary meaning of [limited quantity], which allowed polysemous interpretation from [short-term duration] to [limited degree]. Subsequently, the [limited degree] meaning attenuated, particularly in environments of ‘synonymous expressions’. Since the late 18th century, ‘잠깐’ has specialized to express only [short-term duration]—completing a process of semantic narrowing.
