To settle the questions in dispute on predestination among the circle of the Calvinistic churches in Netherland a synod was held in Dort from November 13, 1618. to May 9, 1619. The Synod of Dort was the greatest synod of the Reformed churches ever held since Reformation. The Synod unanimously rejected and very positively condemned the statement of "Remonstrance" which the Arminians requested. It stated the Reformed doctrine, so-called the five points of Calvinism in the Canons of Dort. It seems to be easy to remember the five points by particular letters, TULIP: Total depravity, Unconditional election, Limited atonement, Irresistible grace, and Perseverance of the saints. The formulation of the Canons of Dort is the highest mark among the creeds of the Reformed churches.
