인종적 타자의 매혹: 로런스의 『께짤코아틀』에 그려진 인종과 성

『께짤코아틀』의 케이트는 멕시코 땅과 인간을 대면해 두려움과 매혹의 상반된 감정을 겪는다. 서구 관광객의 정서적 범위를 넘어서는 이 감정은 그 대상에 대해서만큼이나 주체에 대해서 많은 것을 말해준다. 그것은 자기 문화와 문명을 급진적으로 비판하나 감성적으로는 그 문화와 문명의 강력한 현존을 증언하는 주체가 내적 불안과 욕망을 타 인종에게 투사하는 원시주의를 예시한다. 또 그것은 재현적 '과잉'('실재')을 타자에게서 보고 그것에 추함이나 악이라는 이름을 붙이는 인종주의의 심적 기제를 내포할 수도 있다. 그러나 이런 설명들은 멕시코가 서구 주체의 변화에 미친 영향, 혹은 주체와 객체의 자리바꿈을 고려하지 않음으로써 그 유럽중심적 편향을 드러낸다. 하지만 멕시코에 대한 케이트의 매혹은 혼혈과 혼종 결혼을 주제화하려는 작가의 의식적 구도에 긴밀히 묶여있어 독자의 공감을 이끌어내지 못한다. 이 실패는 서술의 실패이기도 하다. 오웬이나 케이트가 담지하는 서술의 목소리는 인물의 특징을 드러내주는 역할을 제대로 수행하지 못하고 단지 작가의 독백적 담론을 전달하는 데에 기여하곤 한다. 그 결과 케이트의 주인공으로서의 인물 형상화는 한계를 지니게 되고 타 인종의 인간적 문명적 가능성을 탐색하려는 작가의 기획도 문제를 지니게 된다.

Kate Burns of D. H. Lawrence？s Quetzalcoatl suffers the contradictory feelings of fear and fascination vis-？-vis the Mexican land and people. Far beyond the emotional limit of Western tourism, these feelings tell as much of the subject as of the object of experience. They arguably illustrate the primitivist projection of the subject？s internal anxiety and desire onto the other race, a subject who is a radical critic of her own culture and civilization but whose sentiment undeniably attests their powerful presence. Kate？s feelings may also imply the psychical process of racism in which a representational ？excess？？the Real？is recognized in the racial other and subsequently marked as ？ugliness？ or ？evil.？ These two accounts of Kate, however, betray their Eurocentric bias by significantly not considering the active, transformative influence of Mexico on the Western subject？the change in position, indeed, between subject and object. But then again, Kate？s fascination with Mexico fails to create the same response in the reader because her feeling is too tightly aligned to the author？s conscious design to thematize mixed blood and interracial marriage. This failure is also one in narration. The narrative voice carried by characters like Owen and Kate often fails its character-demarcating function, serving only to deliver a monologic authorial discourse. The characterization of Kate as heroine is thus crippled and so after all is Lawrence？s project of exploring human and civilizational possibilities of the other race.
