전남지방 지석묘 사회와 발전단계 - 전남 동부지역을 중심으로 - = The Dolmen - Society and Its Process of Development in Chonnam Province

In this thesis, I lay emphasis on several defects of the researches in Dolmens in Chonnam province that has been taken by many scholars. The first aspect is the matter of the numbers of Dolmens in Chonnam province-there are a lot of Dolmens in Chonnam province, comparing another areas. There are three explanations of this matter. At first, the living conditions of this area were better than any other areas, so density of population was relatively higher. At second, many Dolmens could be built in this area till recent period, comparing another areas. At last, stone cist tomb, pit-tomb and jar coffin tomb that could be built in another areas were very rare in this area, so Dolmens could be the chief type of the graves. The second aspect is that we have to study the master of Dolmens before investigating the stages of social development. According to the building method, the degree of the adjacency and the major axis of the tombs, the group of Dolmens can be divided into small groups. These small groups represent the vertical differences (time), the existence of patriarchy and social hierarchy. The master of Dolmens could be the chief of the country or their family. But the people of the low rank were buried without any equipments. The last aspect is the hierarchy and the reference about the social. development. According to the importance of the prestige goods, the size of Dolmens and the arrangement of tombs, the stages of development of the Dolmen-Society in Southern Coast Area could be devided into 5 types(Ⅰ∼Ⅴ). The number of Dolmens had been decreased from the Ⅰ-type to the Ⅴ-type, so the social hierarchy were stable. Although there were regional differences in this area, Dolmen-Society in Chonnam province would not be the egalitarian society but being evolved in stratified society. And at last stage, this society could be the chiefdom society. But around the Bo-sung River area, the majority of Dolmens are in the Ⅰ, Ⅱtype, so it could show that the speed of the social development was relatively slow.
