Fracture of buried pipelines frequently follows nearby trench excavation, as a result of ground movement. The risk of fracture can of course be avoided by either rerouting the excavation or relaying the pipiline, but where fracture is unlikely such steps are unnecessary. When excavations near services are proposed, decisions have to be taken so as to see that pipelines are suitably protected. This paper sets out to check the safety of buried parallel pipeline on adjacent trench excavation.
