The purpose of this research is to examine the effects of the motivation and satisfaction of participation for lifelong education for the elderly on their life satisfaction.
In order to do this research, the survey was conducted for 150 students of the Senior Academy of Social Welfare Center in Seosan. The contents of the survey was composed of such factors as demographic characteristics, life-long education motivation, lifelong education participation satisfaction, and life satisfaction, and the analysis was done by using the SPSS 15.0 for windows program. The main research results that were revealed through the research are as follows. First, as for the result of the motivation for participating in lifelong education in senescence, the senior lifelong education participants had physical motivation as the highest motivation that enables them to spend their spare time meaningfully and allows them to obtain vitality, and it was followed by social motivation, psychological motivation, self-development motivation, relaxational motivation, and intellectual motivation. As a result of analyzing the difference of the motivation for participating in lifelong education in senescence according to the socio-demographic feature, the intellectual motivation got high as the educational level got low, and the elderly who lives alone or with families had higher relaxational motivation and social motivation than the elderly who lived with people other than families, and women had higher psychological motivation.
Second, as for the satisfaction of participating in lifelong education in senescence, the psychological satisfaction was the highest, and it was followed by social satisfaction, intellectual satisfaction, physical satisfaction, relaxational satisfaction, self-development satisfaction, and intellectual satisfaction. The elderly who lived together with families had higher relaxational satisfaction that the case of living with people other than families, and the elderly whose health conditions were normal had higher psychological satisfaction than those with poor health condition.
Third, the living satisfaction was 3.44 on average, and there was no difference of life satisfaction according to the socio-demographic features. Fourth, as for the results of the analysis of the relationship among the motivation of participating in lifelong education in senescence, satisfaction of participating in lifelong education in senescence, and life satisfaction, in the relationship among the motivations of participating in lifelong education in senescence, a meaningful correlation was noticeable among the motivations of participating other than the psychological motivation and the intellectual motivation. Also in the relationship among the satisfaction of participating in lifelong education in senescence, a meaningful correlation was noticeable among all satisfaction of participating. In addition, there was a meaningful correlation between all the motivations of participating in lifelong education in senescence and the satisfactions of participation. In other words, as the motivation of participation got higher, the satisfaction of participation got higher as well. Meanwhile, as for the life satisfaction, it was shown that as the motivation or satisfaction of participation got higher, the life satisfaction got higher as well in the motivation of participating in lifelong education in senescence or satisfaction of participation, other than self-development motivation, intellectual motivation, psychological motivation, and intellectual motivation. Fifth, in order to examine the factors that affect the life satisfaction in senescence, hierarchical regression analysis was conducted, and among the satisfaction of participating in lifelong education, the intellectual satisfaction was shown as the meaningful factor, and as for the explanatory ability, it increased by 7.8% compared to the previous step and it was shown to have 25.4% of explanatory ability. Proposals were made as follows based on the results of above research. First, as the motivation of participating in lifelong education in senescence is different according to the characteristics of the learner, it would be necessary to develop the educational program that is customized according to the characteristics of the learners in terms of developing and designing the lifelong education program in the future.
Second, as the result of the research, it was possible to identify the high motivations of the elderly for participating in lifelong education in senescence. Accordingly, it would be necessary to expand various facilities for lifelong education in senescence in order to increase and activate the participating rate of lifelong education in senescence, by satisfying the various motivations of lifelong education for the elderly in the future. Third, until now, the lifelong education in senescence was only focused on business propulsion by short-term policies, and it has failed to approach the lifelong education in long-term perspective. It would only be possible for the lifelong education in senescence to take place when the integration of divisions of education, welfare, and employment is achieved with financial support of the government. Lastly, the limits of this research are as follows. First, this research shows the results that in which the random sample was extracted for the students of the Senior Academy of Social Welfare Center in Seosan who reside in Seosan area, and as the subject was extremely confined, it would be meaningless to generalize the results of this research at national level.
Second, it is necessary to develop the measure that has high reliability and validity so that it would be possible to analyze all the factors that are possible to affect the motivation of participating in lifelong education in senescence and the satisfaction as well.
