국문 초록 (Abstract)

John Hope Franklin의 사망은 전후 자유주의 역사학의 종언을 고하는 하나의 계기가 될 것이다. 자유주의 역사학은 이전의 경제적 갈등론을 대체하여 집단의 태도와 행동들에 근거한 역사해석을 시도해왔다. Franklin의 역사학은 동시대의 다른 역사가들에 비해 사실 규명과 객관성을 추구하는 전통적 역사학 방법론에 의한 것이라 말해진다. 그러나 정작 그 자신은 흑인 역사가로서 집단적 증오와 공포에 대한 본능적 감각을 가지고 있었다는 점에서 최근 역사학의 혁명적 변화를 수용하고 있었다. 그의 거의 모든 학술적 경력을 통해 그 자신이 일차적으로 미국 흑인사의 사도로 분류되는 것을 거부해 왔으나, 생애 말에 가까워질수록 점점 더 그 자신이 흑인사의 선도자라는 위상을 활용하였는데, 이는 백인들에게 미국 흑인사회의 눈부신 발전이라는 것이 많은 한계를 안고 있다는 점을 지적하기 위해서였다.

The death of John Hope Franklin has removed one of our last links to the origins of postwar liberal historiography, the period when the study of group attitudes and the actions based on them replaced economic conflict as the dominant research program. Franklin’s scholarship often seemed more conventionally fact-driven and objectivity-consumed than the productions of some of his more venturesome contemporaries, but he nonetheless shared in the revolution in historical writing, in part because as an African American he intuitively understood the nuances of group fears and hates. Although for most of his career Franklin decried attempts to classify him primarily as a student of African-American history, a categorization that he considered too restrictive, toward the end of his long life he gradually began to use the position offered him as the dean of African-American historians in order to demonstrate to white Americans how circumscribed the vaunted progress of black America really was.
