The purpose of this article is to empirically restore The Selected Works of Negro Literature Korea’s only negro literature translated and published in 1965, reconstruct the translation history of negro literature during the Cold War, and explore the multifaceted encounter between negro literature and Korean literature(culture). First, the inside and outside of the translation of The Selected Works of Negro Literature were comprehensively reconstructed and compared with the first published negro literature collection in Japan. This complete collection is Korea’s unique compilation of negro literature and has an editing system that is comparable to understanding the genealogy and instrumental development history of negro literature in the mid-18th century and early 1960s. It has the advantage of understanding the resistant nature of the history of negro American literature by focusing on editing resistant negro literature. This was also a process of Korean canonization of negro American literature. However, it is not enough to understand negro American literature as a whole because it contains only the works of negro artists and does not include black aesthetics that represented a new transition in negro literature amid the influence of Malcolm X’s black nationalism in the 1960s. Although the relationship with Japan’s previously translated and published negro literature may be controversial, it is more reasonable to see the similarity in the composition of the entire collection as a result of introduction and acceptance of resistant negro literature in both Korea and Japan rather than imitation. Second, the racial agenda of Korean society in the 1960s and 1970s was explored macroscopically by linking the ripple effect of this collection with the racial conflict in the United States and the comparable mixed-race-black discourse. Through this, it was possible to confirm the context in which racial discourse was reduced to black-and-white mixed-race and reproduced in the late 1970s, as well as the social conspiracy and exclusion of racism, as well as the expansion of the racial-mixed-race system to multi-regional transnationality. At least, the popular acceptance of negro literature served as an opportunity to interrogate racism that had been firmly established in Korean society. Third, we examined the translation and acceptance of negro literature, focusing on the connection between negro literature and Third World literature. The appropriation of negro literature differs depending on the establishment of the relationship between third world literature and negro literature in the late 1970s and the perspective of third world literature, centered on the third world literature theory of Baek Nak-cheong and Changbi groups, which placed negro literature as a war criminal of third world literature. However, it was a problem that the Third World Literature Theory and American Centrism, which were executiveized due to data limitations caused by the reduced translation of Third World literature and negro literature, were revealed. On the other hand, there was a public enthusiasm for acceptance of negro literature in the United States. An approach that encompasses the two pathways and gaps in the acceptance of negro literature is needed. In order to fill the enthusiasm of the discussion conducted by this paper, it is necessary to expand the translation and acceptance of negro literature to the East Asian level to closely analyze the relationship between the Cold War and negro literature, and to historize racial discourse by advancing the discovery of mixed-race people’s handwriting and research on Amerasian.
