제임스 터렐 작품의 현상학적 지각 공간체험 사례에 대한 이론적 고찰 = A Theoretical Consideration on the Example of Phenomenological Perception Spatial Experience in James Turrell's Work

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 논문은 제임스 터렐(James Turrell, 1943~)의 Catso(1967) ~ Roden Crater(1974~2011)의 작품범위 안에서 빛의 성향과 공간구조 연출의 특징을 시대적으로 대표할 수 있는 8개 작품을 선정하여 인간의 본질적 접근을 위한 현상학적 지각체험의 다양한 공간 표현 가능성을 규명하고자 한다.
현상학의 이론과 지각 공간체험의 이해를 바탕으로 관람자와 작품 사이에서의 상호 작용을 파악했으며 시간성에 의한 빛의 연출, 신체의 움직임에 의한 체험, 감각과 기억에 의한 체험을 현상학적 분석의 틀로 제시하였다. 또 제임스 터렐 작품의 성향을 빛의 위치와 형태에 의한 연출, 목적의식 공간에 의한 연출, 자연요소를 활용한 공간 연출로 분류해 분석의 틀에 적용하여 작품의 의미를 서술적으로 해석하고 특징을 구체화하였다.
결과적으로 제임스 터렐 작품은 빛의 사용에 따른 본질적 자아체험의 목적은 동일하지만 장소적 의미와 공간범위 확장에 따른 작품표현은 관람자의 몰입의 효과를 극대화 시키고 본질적 경험을 제공하는데 있어 의미가 좀 더 명확하게 부각될 수 있음을 보여주었다. 또 현시대가 추구하는 융합적인 사고와 함께 공간디자인의 응용에 있어 좋은 예가 될 수 있다는 것을 확인해 볼 수 있다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This thesis intends to investigate various possibilities of space expression of phenomenological perception experience for human"s essential approach by selecting to 8 works which can periodically represent characteristics of light"s tendency and space structure"s direction characteristics among the range of Catso(1967) ~ Roden Crater(1974~2011), works of James Turrell(1943~).
Based on the theory of phenomenology and understanding of perception spatial experience, the interaction between audience and work was grasped and light"s display by temporality, experience by body"s movement and experience by sense and memory were suggested as the frame of phenomenological analysis. Also, the tendency of James Turrell"s work was divided into display by light"s position and form, display by purpose sense space and space display with natural factor and then, the meaning of work was interpreted descriptively and its characteristics were concreted by applying to the frame of analysis.
In conclusion, this thesis showed that the purpose of essential ego-experience by using light was same in James Turrell"s work, but work expression by expanding space meaning and space range can express the meaning more clearly for maximizing the effect of audience"s immersion and providing essential experience. In addition, it can confirm that becoming a good example for the application of spatial design, with amalgamative thought pursued by current period.
