This study explored the psychological experiences and changes in parenting attitudes of mothers with young children through expressive arts therapy. Participants includedtwo mothers: one exhibiting controlling tendencies associated withhigh parenting anxiety, and the other exhibiting avoidant tendencies related psychological lethargy. A total of 20 to 21 individual expressive arts therapy sessions were conducted once or twice a week, with each session lasting approximately 90 minutes. Data, including verbatim transcripts, artwork, and counseling logs, were collected and analyzed using qualitative case study methods
to integratively examine the mothers’ psychological experiences and processes of change.
The findings indicate that expressive arts therapy provided a psychologically safe environment in which mothers could visually externalize and confrontsuppressed
anxiety and lethargy. These artistic experiences, together with the therapeutic relationship, facilitated a shift away from previous emotional response patterns and
supported the recognition of children as independent individuals. Consequently, the mother with high anxiety moderated her controlling impulses and moved oward an acceptance-based parenting attitude, while the mother with avoidant tendencies restored her inner energy and adopted a more proactive stance in communicating with her child. Through this process, both participants reconstructed parenting not as a task requiring perfection but as a relational experience of utual growth, thereby enhancing their parenting self-efficacy.
In conclusion, this study suggests that expressive arts therapy may serve as a meaningful approach to fostering mothers’ inner growth and facilitating positive shifts in parenting attitudes. By illuminating the process through which mothers come to accept themselves as “good enough mothers,”rather than striving for idealized parental images, this research provides foundational clinical evidencesupporting expressive arts therapy as a substantive clinical alternativein parenting education and counseling.
