Dust refers to particles that are suspended or scattered in the air and can settle down. These particles are classified into various terms based on their size. Generally, Total Suspended Particles (TSP) refers to particles with a diameter of 50μm or less, which includes very fine particulate matter (PM). Fine particulate matter is further divided into PM10 and PM2.5. PM10 represents particles with a diameter smaller than 10 micrometers, while PM2.5 refers to even smaller particles with a diameter smaller than 2.5 micrometers.
In South Korea, since 2001, PM10 and PM2.5 have been regulated as air pollutants, and when they exceed the environmental standards, air pollution alerts are issued.
The generation of dust is influenced by both natural and anthropogenic factors. Natural sources of dust include soil dust, salt generated from seawater, and pollen from plants. Soil dust can be generated in dry areas when soil is carried away by wind. Coastal areas may contain salt generated from seawater in the atmosphere, and pollen from plants naturally floats in the air as well.
The main causes of fine particulate matter are industrial activities and human daily life that introduce particles into the atmosphere:
1. Emissions from burning fossil fuels in boilers or power plants contribute to the formation of particulate matter emissions known as soot.
2. Vehicle exhaust emissions also play a significant role in fine particulate matter pollution. Exhaust gases from vehicles contain harmful particles, especially diesel vehicles tend to emit higher levels of ultrafine particles.
3. Dust generated at construction sites is another source of fine particulate matter pollution. Particles such as soil or sand can be dispersed into the air by wind during construction activities.
4. Handling processes involving powdered raw materials or additives within factories can release airborne dust particles during manufacturing operations.
5. Emissions from incineration facilities also contribute to airborne particulate matter pollution.
These industrial activities and human daily life-related factors contribute significantly to the introduction of particles into the atmosphere as fine particulate matter (PM) or dust.
In this study, we aim to develop an anti-microbial functional composite material based on antimicrobial activity promoting microalgae for multi-purpose use in various industrial and construction sites for mitigating or removing fine (particulate) dust that occurs at industrial sites or construction sites where anti-dust agents were used only limitedly before.
