This study critically examines the meaning of “strategic competition,” a core concept defining U.S.–China relations, and the patterns of its use in South Korean discourse. In domestic academic research and media, strategic competition is often employed as a rhetorical expression of U.S.–China conflict and is frequently used interchangeably with terms such as hegemonic rivalry or a new Cold War. However, strategic competition as it originated in the United States denotes more than mere conflict; it is characterized by long-term and sustained competition, the avoidance of direct military confrontation, and structural antagonism, and is closely associated with the concept of “net assessment.” The analysis finds that South Korean research has not sufficiently reflected these core characteristics, thereby limiting its ability to derive meaningful policy implications.
