넷플릭스를 통해 퀴어 세계시민 상상하기 = Imagining Queer Cosmopolitan through Netflix

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본고는 넷플릭스가 LGBTQ+ 콘텐츠를 가시화하며 알고리즘에 기반한 추천 시스템을 통해 이용자와 상호작용하는 방식을 고찰하며 넷플릭스를 통해 결집되는 정동 정치적 역량을 짚어내고자 한다. 콘텐츠의 추천 시스템을 통해서 구성되는 이용자의 ‘알고리즘 정체성’을 ‘퀴어 정체성’으로 상정하고자 한다. 여기에서 퀴어 정체성은 의식적으로 퀴어로 정체화하며 LGBTQ+ 콘텐츠를 시청하는 이용자들뿐만 아니라 무의식적인 시청 패턴에 따라 그러한 콘텐츠와 더불어 퀴어적 의미를 내포한 다양한 콘텐츠로 구축되는 비규범적 정체성까지 아우른다. 다음으로, 오리지널 콘텐츠의 전 세계 동시 공개를 원칙으로 유도하는 시청 경험의 동시성에 주목하고자 한다. 전 세계의 성소수자들은 넷플릭스를 통해 동시성이라는 감각을 유지하며 다양한 LGBTQ+ 콘텐츠를 시청한다. 이를 통해 그들은 자긍심을 고양하고 국가의 경계를 넘어 정동적으로 결속하며 퀴어 공동체적 경험을 한다. 그것은 동성결혼 법제화의 동력이 될 뿐만 아니라, 동시에 다양한 비규범적이고 급진적인 정체성에 대한 사유로까지 이끌 수 있다. 넷플릭스는 LGBTQ+ 콘텐츠를 탐색하고 시청하는 이용자를 퀴어 세계시민으로 호명하며 ‘초국가적인 퀴어 정동 공동체’를 일시적으로 창출한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This paper examines how Netflix visualizes LGBTQ+ content and interacts with users through an algorithm-based recommendation system, and aims to point out the affective political capabilities that are gathered through Netflix. We intend to assume the user's ‘alarm identity’ constituted through the content recommendation system as ‘queer identity’. Here, the queer identity consciously identifies as queer, and encompasses not only users who watch LGBTQ+ content but also non-normative identities built into various contents with queer meaning according to unconscious viewing patterns. Next, I would like to pay attention to the simultaneity of the viewing experience, which induces the worldwide simultaneous disclosure of the original content. LGBTQ+ content is maintained by sexual minorities around the world through Netflix, and they watch various LGBTQ+ content. Through this, they raise self-esteem, emotionally bind across the boundaries of the country, and have a queer community experience. It not only becomes a driving force for the legalization of same-sex marriage, but at the same time, it can lead to thoughts of various non-normative and radical identities. Netflix temporarily creates a “transnational queer affective community” by calling users who explore and watch LGBTQ+ content as queer cosmopolitan.
