Inflexible emotion regulation (ER)—such as reduced ER variability (a diminished ability to flexibly choose the most fitting strategy(ies) from a range of options)—has been theorized as a key mechanism underlying psychopathology, including major depressive disorder (MDD). However, a recent study (Hu & Tamir, 2025) showed that individuals with MDD exhibited greater between-strategy variability, indicated by a larger standard deviation in ER strategy use scores, compared to those without depression. This makes it unclear whether greater ER variability among individuals with depression reflects adaptive flexibility, an inflexible overreliance on a limited set of ER strategies, or increased volatility in ER. The present study aims to clarify ER variability in daily life among individuals with and without MDD by assessing both between-strategy variability and ER strategy switching (i.e., switching to a different strategy(ies) between timepoints). A total of 104 individuals with and without MDD (51 and 53 per group, respectively) reported their momentary ER strategy use, perceived ER success, and current affect six times per day over a 7-day period. Our results showed that individuals with MDD switch between ER strategies more frequently in daily life than controls, although this switching was not associated with subsequent changes in affect. These results suggest that such shifts among individuals with MDD may reflect effortful yet volatile and ineffective attempts at regulation.
