Recently, microfluidic systems have been used in many biological applications such as pretreatment of samples, diagnosis of diseases, and drug screening. We have developed microfluidic system for the study of in vitro cell culture and cytotoxicity. In order to create efficient cell culture environment, we utilized polyelectrolyte multilayer film and AgNP coating film modifying the surface of the micro-channels. Different behaviors of the cells were shown depending on the hydrophilicity, functional groups of the coating surfaces. We could apply one of the anti-fouling, biocompatible, and antibacterial coatings for the microfluidic devices to the study of cellular activities. The results of this study indicate that the micro-channels suitably surface functionalized might be available to effectively monitor cell interaction and cancerous cells upon the exposure to anti-cancer drug. Also, it was possible to conduct a long-term cell culture system using antibacterial film. This functionalized microfluidic system may have a great potential in cell-based drug screening and some related bio-applications.
