This study explored the cognitive nature and pedagogical implications of creative processes, logically analyzing the characteristics of several artificial products and the processes possibly involved in creating such products. It turned out that almost all the artificial products were creative in terms of their usefulness and originality which are often used as creativity measures, and that the processes resu1ted in such products could be regarded as special cases of problem solving processes. Problem solving stages were identified and the processes of each stages were examined.
This examination lead to the conclusions, 1) that all problem solving processes are triggered by difficulties encountered as natural consequences of goal-directed activities, 2) that creative solutions are generated when problems were defined with diversity and solutions were explored from many perspective, 3) that these processes necessitate highly elaborated knowledge systems and flexible use of the systems, and 4) that what propels these processes are strong curiosity and need for achievement. Pedagogical implications of these conc1usions were discussed.
