바울이 기대한 교회의 선교적 역할: 고린도전서를 중심으로

국문 초록 (Abstract)

바울이 교회에 선교나 복음 전도에 적극적으로 참여하도록 격려하거나 권면하지 않았다는 점이 종종 지적되곤 한다. 이러한 맥락에서 바울이 교회 공동체의 선교적 사명과 역할을 어떻게 이해했는지에 대한 적지 않은 논쟁이 있었다. 논쟁의 진전을 위해서 본 논문은 고린도전서를 중심으로 교회선교의 본질적 측면과 기능적 측면을 살펴봄으로써 바울 선교와 교회선교 사이의 관계를 파악하는 것을 목적으로 한다.
바울은 교회가 자기와 동일한 선교사역을 감당하거나 획일적인 역할을 수행하기를 기대하지 않았다. 오히려 그는 교회선교를 본질적 측면(선교적 사명)과 기능적 측면(선교적 역할)으로 구별하여 전개한다. 그는 “본받음의 명령”을 통해 자신이 무슨 일을 하든 복음을 위하는 선교적 존재로 살아가듯이 고린도 교인들 역시 선교적 존재로 살아가기를 권면한다. 또한, 그는 교회와 온 세상의 주로 등극하신 그리스도의 몸 사상을 통해 모든 공동체가 복음 사역을 자기의 일과 책임으로 받아들여야 함을 제시한다. 이러한 의미에서 바울은 자신뿐 아니라 전체로서 교회가 본질적으로 복음 사역에 동참해야 할 선교적 사명이 있다는 점을 강조한다.
그러나 바울은 교회가 이러한 선교적 사명을 획일적으로 감당하는 것이 아니라 각자의 은사와 주어진 상황에 따라 다양한 역할로 담당하기를 기대했다. 이러한 기대에 따라 어떤 사람은 특정한 은사에 따라 교회의 파송을 받아 바울과 함께 여행하면서 선교 활동을 하거나 새로운 도시에 가서 교회를 설립했고, 어떤 사람은 바울의 선교 활동에 대한 재정적 지원을 통해 선교사역에 동참했다. 또 어떤 사람은 기회가 있을 때마다 이웃의 불신자를 교회에 초청하는 예배를 통해, 그리고 세상의 도덕성을 뛰어넘는 매력적인 선행을 통해 그들의 구원을 위해 힘썼다. 또 어떤 사람은 가정에서 자신의 불신 가족의 구원을 위해 노력했다. 선교와 복음 전도의 사명은 교회 전체에 있지만, 그 역할은 개인 신자의 은사와 삶의 상황에 맞게 수행된다. 그렇다면, 바울 선교와 교회선교 사이의 불연속성을 주장하는 것은 더 이상 타당하지 않다. 바울의 선교와 교회의 선교는 모두 이 세상에 그리스도의 주권을 선포해야 할 그리스도의 몸으로서 교회의 동일한 선교적 과제에 속하기 때문이다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

It is often pointed out that Paul did not encourage the church to actively participate in mission or evangelism. In this context, there has been considerable debate about how Paul understood the missionary role of the church community. To advance the debate, this paper aims to grasp the relationship between Paul’s mission and church mission by examining the essential aspects and functional aspects of missionary work of church centering on 1 Corinthians.
Paul did not expect the church to perform the same missionary work as him or play a uniform role. Rather he unfolds church missions by distinguishing it into an essential aspect (missionary existence) and a functional aspect (missionary roles). He encourages the Corinthians to live as missionary beings for the gospel through “his imitation command,” just as he lives as missionary beings no matter what he does. He also exhorts through the thought of the body of Christ, who has risen as Lord of the Church and the whole world that all communities should accept gospel ministry as their work and responsibility. In this sense, Paul emphasizes that the church as a whole as well as himself have essentially a missionary mission to join the gospel ministry.
However, Paul expected the church to play a variety of roles according to each gift and given situation, rather than uniformly carrying out this missionary mission. In accordance with this expectation, some traveled with Paul to do missionary work, or established a church in a new city, and some have joined in a missionary mission through financial support for Paul’s missionary work. Some worked for their salvation through worship inviting unbelievers from their neighbors to the church and through attractive good works that transcend the morality of the world, and others worked for the salvation of their unbelieving family at home.
The mission of missionary work and evangelism is in the entire church, but its role is carried out according to the gifts of individual believers and the situation of life. If so, it is no longer valid to claim the discontinuity between Paulian and Church missions. This is because both Paul’s mission and the church’s mission belong to the same missionary task of the church as the body of Christ that must proclaim the sovereignty of Christ in this world.
