Adjacent-Sentence Semantic Similarity as a Measure of L2 Korean Reading Text Difficulty*

Abstract: This study examined the adjacent-sentence semantic similarity of Korean reading texts using Sentence-BERT (S-BERT) and investigated its potential as a meaning-based variable for text difficulty analysis. The dataset comprised 129 reading texts from New Yonsei Korean, including 51 beginner-level, 40 intermediate-level, and 38 advanced-level texts. After sentence segmentation using Kiwi, sentence embeddings were generated and cosine similarity was calculated between adjacent sentences. Statistical analyses included the Kruskal-Wallis test, Spearman’s rank correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis incorporating mean sentence length. The results showed that adjacent-sentence semantic similarity increased across proficiency levels, with mean values of 0.4664 for beginner texts, 0.4819 for intermediate texts, and 0.4994 for advanced texts; however, the differences were not statistically significant (H=2.709, p=.258). Mean sentence length was significantly and positively correlated with semantic similarity (ρ=.362, p<.001). When mean sentence length was taken into account in the regression analysis, significant differences emerged between beginner and intermediate texts (B=-0.0557, p=.023) and between beginner and advanced texts (B=-0.0587, p=.022). The adjusted means were 0.5155 for beginner texts, 0.4598 for intermediate texts, and 0.4568 for advanced texts, indicating that the pattern across proficiency levels was reversed after accounting for mean sentence length. These findings suggest that adjacent-sentence semantic similarity may serve as a meaning-based difficulty variable that complements conventional form-based readability features. They also indicate that text difficulty analysis should consider not only the absolute values of individual features but also related linguistic factors such as mean sentence length.
