Purpose: To explain the effect of teacher communication (rhetorical and relational communication) on learning presence (cognitive, emotional, and social presence) in the real-time video class
Methodology: The rhetorical communication was examined in terms of clarity, competence, and technological ability, while relational communication was examined in terms of verbal immediacy, nonverbal immediacy, and response to questions. Regression analysis was conducted for questionnaires administered to 280 university students.
Results: Results showed that teacher clarity and technological ability were positively related to learning presence and teacher response to questions was positively related to emotional and social presence. In addition, technological ability had a strong predictive value of learning presence.
Value: This study provided implications for the need of teachers’ clarity, response, and technological ability to increase learning presence in real-time video class.
