경기 옛 읍치 마을의 공간 구조와 변화 - 평택 팽성읍 객사리를 중심으로 -

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 연구에서는 옛 읍치 마을의 하나인 평택시 팽성읍 객사리를 대상으로 하여 과거 읍치 공간을 재구성해 보고 이 공간들이 근현대를 거치면서 어떻게 변화했는지를 살펴보았다. 과거 팽성읍은 조선시대 삼남대로와 충청로의 분기점에 위치해 있으면서 중요한 역로가 지나가는 곳이라 일찍이 주막거리와 장시가 발달해 있었고 객사리는 팽성읍의 읍치로서 전형적인 읍치 공간 구성을 갖추고 있었다. 관아를 중심으로 향교와 사직이 존치했었고 관아 주변에는 읍성이 있었다. 읍성 북쪽에는 부군당과 빙고가 있었으며 남쪽으로는 남단도 있었다. 이러한 읍치 공간을 옛 지도와 일제강점기 지적도를 통해 재구성해 볼 수 있었다.
이러한 읍치 공간은 근현대를 거치면서 많은 변화가 있었다. 읍성의 성곽은 일부 언덕으로만 그 흔적이 남아 있고 옛 관아가 있었던 공간은 팽성행정복지센터 등 또 다른 공공건물의 공간으로 바뀌었다. 일제강점기에는 방공호 등 일제의 전술 기지가 들어섰고 해방 이후에는 주막거리와 색시집, 군부대 등이 생겨났다. 지금은 아파트와 농협 마트, 각종 식당들, 대규모 체육공원 등으로 인해 도시적인 경관과 공간으로 변해가고 있다.
이처럼, 과거의 공간을 복원해 보고 현재의 공간과 대비해 보는 작업은 어떤 마을에 대한 기록 사업을 할 때 하나의 방법론을 제시해 주고 있다. 마을 기록은 현재의 모습만을 기록하는 것은 아닐 것이다. 과거의 공간과 사건, 기억을 발굴하고 재구성하여 현대 시점에서 이를 기록하는 것도 중요한 작업이라고 할 수 있다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

In this study, targeting Gaksari, Paengseong-eup, Pyeongtaek-si, one of the old Eupchi villages, we re-constructed the old Eupchi space and examined how these spaces changed through the modern and contemporary times. Paengseong-eup in the past was located at the junction of Samnam-daero and Chungcheong-ro in the Joseon Dynasty, and an important station route passed, so a street lined with inns and marketplace had been developed early, and Gaeksari was the Eupchi of Paengseong-eup and had a typical Eupchi space composition. Hyanggyo and Sajik existed around a government office, and there was an Town-fortress around government office. To the north of the town was Bugundang and Bingo, and to the south was the southern end. This Eupchi space could be reconstructed through old maps and cadastral maps during the Japanese colonial period.
These Eupchi spaces have undergone many changes through the modern and contemporary era. Town-fortress wall remains only a few hills, and the space where the former government office was located has been replaced with another public building such as Paengseong Administrative Welfare Center. During the Japanese colonial period, Japanese tactical bases, such as air defense shelters, were built, and after liberation, barracks, gisaeng houses, and military units were created. Nowadays, it is transforming into an urban landscape and space due to apartments, Nonghyup Mart, various restaurants, and a large sports park.
In this way, the work of restoring the space of the past and comparing it with the present space suggests a methodology when conducting a documentary project for a village. Village records will not only record the current state. It can be said that it is an important work to discover and reconstruct the spaces, events and memories of the past and record them from a modern perspective.
