The development of efficient, low-cost, and sustainable electrocatalysts for overall wat-er splitting is critical to advancing hydrogen-based clean energy technologies. Herein, we are developed two materials and mechanistically analysed. First, a defect-engineered iron-integrated graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4-Fe) electrocatalyst synthesized via a facile urea pyrolysis route followed by controlled thermal treatment with nanostructure Iron and selective HCl acid leaching. The high-temperature pyrolysis stabilizes pyridinic-N coordination with Fe centres, while partial nitrogen depletion induces abundant structural defects and carbon reconstruction. This synergistic structural modulation of g-CN-Fe catalyst delivers outstanding oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activity with a low overpotential of 269 mV and 145 mV at 10 mA cm⁻² in alkaline media. Furthermore, a symmetric g-CN-Fe∥g-CN-Fe electrolyzer achieves overall water splitting at a low cell voltage of 1.64 V at 10 mA cm⁻², maintaining remarkable durability over 60 h in 1 M KOH. Second, a hierarchical Fe–Mo–Se@FeOOH/g-C3N4 heterostructure (FMS/gCN@FO) is rationally constructed, in which FeOOH nanophases are uniformly anchored onto a Fe–Mo selenide/g-C3N4 framework, forming robust Fe–Mo–Se–O–N interfacial junctions. The FMS/gCN@FO delivers low overpotentials of 246 mV for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and 133 mV for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) at 10 mA cm-2 in alkaline media. In a two-electrode configuration, the FMS/gCN@FO∥FMS/gCN@FO electrolyzer achieves efficient overall water splitting with a cell voltage of 1.65 V at 10 mA cm-2 and maintains stable operation for 60 h. Temperature-dependent electrochemical measurements combined with Arrhenius and Eyring analyses reveal consistently reduced activation energies and lower activation enthalpy for FMS/gCN@FO, accompanied by favorable enthalpy–entropy compensation that facilitates the rate-determining OOH* formation during OER. These results that interfacial and defect engineering g-C₃N₄ based electrocatalysts represents a promising earth-abundant alternative to noble-metal electrocatalysts for efficient and durable alkaline water splitting.
