조선 지식인의 용재총화(慵齋叢話) 활용 양상과 그 성격 = How Joseon Intellectuals Used Yongjaechonghwa(慵齋叢話): Patterns and Characteristics

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본고는 성현(成俔)의 󰡔용재총화(慵齋叢話)󰡕가 조선 중·후기 지식인 사회에서 어떻게 읽히고 활용되었는지를 검토하여, 조선 전기 사회·문화를 보여주는 대표 문헌으로서 󰡔용재총화󰡕의 가치를 새롭게 조명하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 한국고전종합 DB에서 󰡔용재총화󰡕 관련 검색어를 통해 인용 문헌을 수집한 뒤, 시대·저자·텍스트 유형별로 인용 양상을 정리하였다. 그 결과 ‘사실 보강 및 고증’, ‘인물 생애의 전기적 활용 및 현양’, ‘비판적 수용 및 기존 이념의 재생산 근거’, ‘가치평가 및 기록 의도 부각’의 네 범주로 분류하였다.
분석 결과, 조선 전기·중기에는 관찬 편찬물에서도 󰡔용재총화󰡕가 비교적 논평 없이 인용되어, 정사·지리지·문집 편찬을 보완하는 정보원으로 기능했음을 확인하였다. 반면 조선 중기 이후에는 다른 문헌과의 대조를 통해 기록의 진위를 가리려는 고증적 읽기가 강화되어 󰡔용재총화󰡕가 검증과 논쟁의 대상으로도 활용되었다. 또한 조선후기에는 문집·족보·가전류 텍스트에서 인물의 덕행과 가문 기억을 구성하는 전기적 자료로 널리 동원되었고, 풍교에 대한 비판과 사료적 효용을 부각하는 의견이 병존하는 가운데 사대부 본인의 기록 행위의 의미를 부각하는 준거로서 지속적으로 호명되었다. 이러한 검토를 통해 본고는 기존 󰡔용재총화󰡕 연구가 개별 일화의 문학성이나 사료적 가치 및 진위 논쟁에 한정되던 경향을 넘어, 조선 지식의 장에서 다각도로 활용되고 재구성되어 온 양상을 밝히고자 하였다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This article investigates how Yongjaechonghwa(慵齋叢話), compiled by Seong Hyeon (成俔), was read and utilized by intellectuals in mid- to late Joseon Korea, and reconsiders its status as a key source for understanding society and culture in early Joseon. Using the Korean Classics Database (한국고전종합DB), the study collects texts that cite Yongjae chonghwa and organizes them by period, author, and genre/type of text. It then classifies the purposes and modes of citation into four categories: (1) supplementation and evidential verification of historical/cultural facts, (2) biographical use for portraying lives and commemorating exemplary figures, (3) critical reception through comparison and refutation, and (4) evaluative references that foreground the value of the book and the rationale of record-keeping.
The findings show that in the early and middle Joseon periods, Yongjae chonghwa was often cited without extensive comment even in state-sponsored compilations such as Yeolseong eoje and the Sinjeung Dongguk yeoji seungnam, indicating that it functioned as a reservoir of information that complemented official histories and geographical or literary compilations. From the mid-Joseon period onward, however, scholarly reading increasingly involved corroboration with other sources, and Yongjae chonghwa became an object of verification and debate. In late Joseon, it was widely mobilized in collected works, genealogies, and family biographies as a resource for reconstructing moral exemplarity and family memory; at the same time, conflicting evaluations of the text—critiques of its alleged harm to moral instruction and defenses of its documentary usefulness—coexisted, and the book was repeatedly invoked as a reference point for discussing the meaning of writing and preserving records. By foregrounding these patterns of use and reception, this study moves beyond approaches limited to the literary qualities of individual anecdotes or disputes over factual authenticity, and clarifies Yongjae chonghwa as a dynamic medium through which Joseon intellectual knowledge and arguments were continually mediated and reconfigured.
