Resist felting is a constructing method of tactile fiber sculpture that transforms the plane into a 3-D object by controlling equilibrium of a flat template surrounded by layers of wool, acquiring depth and creating volumetric extensions during the pulling process. The purpose of this study is to establish the theoretical foundation of resist felting and to analyze the sculptural characteristics of previous studies by identifying the possibilities of its type. The research methodology uses a literature review for theoretical consideration and an internet search for the collection of previous studies. The first half of the paper begins with an overview of wet felting and discusses the basic classification of resist templates, the sculptural principles and production process of resist felting, and appropriate material types. The second half of the paper analyzes contemporary resist felt work by categorizing them into four types: discontinuous relief effects, shibori bump, centralized single chamber, and multiple chambers with continuous variations. Resist felting makes the leap to three-dimensionality using a planar template as the essential tool. It is based on the principle of controlling the stiffness of a smooth membrane enclosing a void and the density of fine fiber strands, resulting in an almost limitless spectrum of three-dimensional form expression. This is due to the specificity of the felting process, which involves the assembly and binding of tangles of wool fibers, which are flexible, malleable and mobile. By creating a seamless hollow form that can be continuously transformed, rather than a fixed entity, resist felting is a major step forward in expanding the methods of felt sculpture, changing the common perception that wet felting is primarily limited to planar outcomes.
