One of the biggest concerns in the modern society is image-making. Image-making in the modern society is the issues not only for those who be watched by the public such as politicians and entertainers but also for the ordinary people as it is the times when those who can utilize their images favorably are successful and gain recognition from others.
Television in this age of image-making makes us judge a lot of information in visual aspect and exercise great influence over us. As television has great effects on image-making, the content of broadcast and figures on television draw a lot of attention from the public. Especially, TV anchorwomen are becoming the objects of envy or desire in terms of appearance and image for men as well as young women.
Thus, in this study, the researcher examines the elements that constitute anchorwomen's outer images through literature studies. And then, based upon them, she analyzes how the anchorwomen's fashion images have changed since color broadcasting started in the 1980s by analyzing TV anochorwomen's appearances. In particular, costumes, hair styles, make-up styles of anchorwomen on TV news programs are analyzed by period from the 1980s to the 1990s and since the year 2000 up to now, and the relationship between the fashion image of the anchorwoman on each broadcasting company's main news program and the characteristics of the image each broadcasting company has is analyzed with focus. Before these analyses, however, theoretical backgrounds are given first to promote understanding of the characteristics of news programs, the concepts of new anchorperson, the concept of image-making and the formation of personal images.
The result of research topics are as follows:
First, there have been differences in changes of anchorwomen's fashion images since the 1980s. In the early 1980s, though there was color television broadcasting, it was hard to find various colors in the costumes of anchorwomen. Especially, the KBS's representative anchorwoman, Shin Eun-Kyung's outer image was not distinctive - neat and modest. However, in the late 1980s, since colors became diverse and the interest in fashion-image creation increased with the growing concern of colors for costumes in fashion and makeups in style, appearances, significantly different form those in the early 1980s, began to be presented in the chic, urban styles. During this period, Baek Ji-Yeon, an anchorwoman at MBC, emerged as the representative anchorwoman in the 1980s, succeeding to Shin Eun-Kyung, with challenging image. Baek Ji-Yeon had different image from Shin Eun-Kyung by creating the atmosphere of an urban woman with her confident attitude and costumes and with hair style that reflected fashion of the times.
Second, in the 1990s, as broadcasting companies started to compete with each other through news programs, anchorperson's image serves as an important factor that affects viewer's rating and anchorwomen's fashion images become more stylish and colorful. KBS established intellectual and stylish image of anchorwomen through Yoo Jung-Ah and Hwang Hyun-Jung. MBC had Baek Ji-Yeon in the very blossom of her images and was very successful in image-making as her charisma was even reflected in the production of the news program. On the other hand, Han Su-Jin replacing the first anchorwoman Choi Young-Im presented herself as the most stylish one in the 1990s with her mannish atmosphere, which was radically different from other anchorwomen. The trend in anchorwomen's appearances, which started with Han Su-Jin, has accelerated since 2000. The overall trend of anchorwomen's appearances can be summarized with Jung Se-Jin's plain image at KBS, Kim Ju-Ha's gender-neutral image and urban styles at MBC, and Kim So-Won's young and dynamic image at SBS. This trend shows that the modern society pursues natural stylishness rather than extravagant feminine beauties.
Third, anchorwomen's outer images at each broadcasting company exactly reflects the company's image. KBS's image is considered authoritative and practical, upon which the anchorwomen's costumes, makeups and hair styles are produced with a focus on naturalness and neatness. MBC's image is regarded as entertaining and practical, which is something between KBS and SBS. Their anchorwomen also have more modern and stylish images than those at KBS.
SBS's image is the most dynamic and youngest among three broadcasting companies. Thus, their anchorwomen have the images of cyber world, being dynamic and unique. They enjoy wearing the basic mannish styles in gray or in pastel colors, and their hair styles are not typical anchorwomen's, in sporty style with bangs over their foreheads.
Based upon the above analysis results, it is confirmed that each different image is produced according to how outer image elements are combined. These result offers room for further consideration in that the image-making has effects not only on TV but also on real life, and, thus, from the various anchorwomen's cases, we can draw a conclusion of how to create our own outer images as a major factor in positive image-making.
