다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This study is aimed to explore the key factors that make it possible to move audience greatly by dint of an analysis on the film. The main elements include affective human, historical background, poverty and success, sacrifice or dedication, and nostalgia and a reversal. First of all, regarding an emotional human, the main characters, Deok-Soo(played by Jung-Min Hwang) and Yeong-Ja(Played by Yoon-Jin Kim), are nice and warm-hearted no matter how hard their life might be, which has much emotional appeal. Then, the film,〈Ode to My Father〉, is a story about a family who escaped from North Korea at end of the Korean War: the withdrawal of the troop of Heungnam, in the 1950s, dispatching the miners and nurses to Germany, entry into the Vietnam War and separated South and North Korean families. These historical backgrounds, reflected in the film, succeeded in captivating a large of audience. Besides, the ending of the film puts an emphasis on poverty and success, which touches audience deeply by expression of overcoming the poverty and of achieving success, through love for the family and fathers sacrifice. Fourth, the virtue of sacrifice and devotion appeals to the heart of audience. Deok-Soo is the father who does anything as possible as he can for a family, which undoubtedly leads a myriad of viewers, especially in their fifties and sixties, step into the theater. Fifth, 〈Ode to My Father〉 reminds us of the old song, the process of the transition in the traditional market from the 1950s to the 2000s, a hard life of Korean miners and nurses in Germany, the pledge to the flag and the KBS program of reunions between separated families in the two Koreas. Last but not least, anyone who comes to watch the film can experience the reversal by observation of two couples, one Deok-Soo and Yeong-Ja, the other Dalgoo and a German proctor: even though Korean miners and nurses are seen to have a good time at a party, most of the spectators might have sorrowful expression on their face. Also, the scene that as the couple of Deok-Soos children asks his parents to take care of the grandchildren for family trip, Deok-Soo says to himself, Arent we a family member? definitely gives us laughter and tears at the same time. These reversals of the film helps to squeeze laughers and tears from audience, which makes us feel impressed.
