As social being, human lives in a society influencing each other. At education fields, students get potential education establishing sociality not only through learning knowledge but also through indirectly learning social adaptation by way of communal living and relationship with their peer group. In addition, children live their lives creating relationship at schools. Recognizing that such friendship shows same aspect as that of social network, it reminds us of "relations diagram" as a sociometry measuring instrument. Social network is the sociological concept that grasps relationship between an individual, group and society as a network.
In order to confirm whether students enter into mutual relations to maintain proper sociality or not, schools have used a method to measure sociality of students through a handwritten survey by the teacher in charge and a questionnaire methodology by a specialized institution. Such methods only provide fragmentary information because it grasps sociality level of individual student through analysis and then submits a document to the teacher in charge for one-time use.
Purpose of this study is to obtain accurate diagram of student's relations within a group and to verify sociality level of individual students. The diagram can be completed using a program after information has been collected through a simple survey on which related students form at a school. If you use this program, you can understand at a glance that students with good sociality form lots of relationship while students without good sociality have a problem in formation of relationship. If a teacher distinguishes students with good sociality (popular children) from students those who less sociality (unpopular children) and he (or she) organizes lessons after having reflected it on class management as well as cooperative learning and etc, students can be provided with opportunities to reestablish sociality. In addition, a teacher can early sort out and manage such children who are excluded due to lack of sociality and then, he (or she)will be able to provide quick solutions to students who need help.
Studies with respect to relationship between sociality and academic achievement have been reported in various fields and we are able to understand that sociality of students may give influence on school grades and therefore, it is also important to make efforts to attain and improve sociality. A teacher easily distinguishes unpopular children from popular children through this program and so, he (or she) can obtain data without spending extra expenses and time.
Research method is as follows; the teacher in charge obtains information through a survey to make a student write down names of intimate friends limitlessly; he (or she) inputs such information into a program. Then, the survey is conducted as below; students with large number of selections (more than 3 persons) are deemed as popular children (high sociality) while students who only selected others instead of being selected are deemed as unpopular children (low sociality). It can be said that the more selections there are between both parties, the closer their relationship is. Experiment was proceeded on 3rd grade students of primary school in Suwon and 4 classes were randomly selected to protect personal information of students. Number of each class was 32 students and the formation of a diagram for their relationship could be verified through a survey and input of survey data into a program.
Research results could be achieved through a survey conducted on respective teachers in charge who participated in the experiment with respect to the change in academic achievement and sociality when they had planned a class after having judged and reflected sociality of student's through a relationship diagram of students or otherwise to the contrary. Implications given by this study are such that experimental results through sociality of a child and relationship diagram are accurate enough to be applied in actual classes.
Sociality of a child is very important data for a teacher to plan lessons and to guide students and the teacher can plan a class to improve academic achievement and sociality of a student if the teacher reflects the survey result of relation diagram. Furthermore, it is possible for a teacher to measure at any time he (or she) wants and it is also possible to measure long-term change of a student through data programming instead of fragmentary record only. In other words, we can anticipate an effect to prevent social problems including suicide, bullying and antisocial behavior earlier by sorting out unpopular children and continuously managing them. This study expects that the "program of student relation diagram", a sociometry measuring instrument, is actually utilized by a teacher to guide students and lessons so that it will help improvement and management of student sociality.
